Historical Description

WYSALL, or Wissawe, is a village and parish, 3 ½ miles west from Widmerpool station on the Nottingham and Kettering line of the Midland railway, 7 miles north-east from Loughborough and 9 south-east from Nottingham, in the Rushcliffe division of the county, southern division of the wapentake of Rushcliffe, Nottingham petty sessional division, union and county court district of Loughborough, rural deanery of South Bingham, archdeaconry of Nottingham and diocese of Southwell. A brook which flows into the Soar passes through the parish. The church of The Holy Trinity is an edifice of stone, in the Early Decorated style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of three bays, south porch und a western embattled tower with an octagonal spire and containing 3 bells: the chancel has a wagon-headed roof and contains a large altar tomb of the 16th century to Hugh Armstrong, with recumbent figures of himself and his wife: round the sides of the tomb are sculptured figures and shields of arms: there are two piscinae, and an ancient oak screen with gates; the church plate, of silver, is modern. The church was restored in 1874, at a cost of £700. The register dates from 1654 for all entries. The living is a vicarage, annexed to that of Willoughby, joint net yearly value £130, derived from 194 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Miss Parker, and held since 1885 by the Rev. Walter Hinde Richardson. A vicarage house was built by the late vicar, at a cost of £1,500, and is pleasantly situated on an eminence out of the village. There are Wesleyan and General Baptist chapels. There are charities of £5 annual value, which sum is given in money to the poor at Christmas. Mrs. Smith, of Bunny Hall, is lady of the manor. The principal landowners are Major George Coke Robertson, of Widmerpool Hall, Capt. William Pochin Warner, of Langton Hall, Market Harborough, and Mr. Bennett, of Sawley. The soil is clay; subsoil, lias clay. The chief crops are wheat, beans and roots. The acreage is 1,554; rateable value, £1,669; the population in 1901 was 188.

Public Elementary School (mixed), built in 1870, at a cost of £163, for 80 children: average attendance, 41.
