Historical Description

FIFIELD is a parish situated on the Evenlode, on the border of Gloucestershire, 4 miles west from Shipton and 3 south from Chipping Norton junction stations on the Oxford and Worcester section of the Great Western railway and 4 ½ north-west from Burford, in the Northern division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Chadlington, Chipping Norton union and county court district, rural deanery of Chipping Norton, and archdeaconry and diocese of Oxford. The church of St. John the Baptist is an ancient building of stone, chiefly of Early English date, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and a small octagonal western tower of Early English date, with a broach spire, and containing 3 bells: the chancel, restored by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, is Early English, and has a Decorated east window filled with stained glass by the present rector: the nave was restored in 1840, and has one stained window and an Early English bell-cot on the eastern gable, with the sanctus bell in its original position: the font is a Perpendicular work: there are about 180 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1714; marriages, 1754; burials, 1712. The living is a rectory, with that of Idbury annexed, tithe rent-charge £146, average £110, joint gross yearly value £321, with glebe (£85) and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Oxford, and held since 1883 by the Rev. Samuel York M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford. The Primitive Methodist chapel is now used by the rector as a parish room. The Countess Talbot’s charity of £3 yearly is for clothing; Bray’s charity, left by Jane Bray, of Great Barrington, Gloucestershire, in 1715, provides clothing for two poor people. Mr. Frederick Matthews, who is lord of the manor, and John Edmund Frederick Chambers esq. of the Hurst, near Alfreton, Derbyshire, are principal landowners. The Old Manor House was restored and enlarged by the owner, Mr. F. Matthews, in 1890. The soil is stone brash; subsoil, rock. The chief crops, are wheat, barley, oats, turnips &c. The area is 1,104 acres; rateable value, £975; the population in 1891 was 222.

The children of this parish attend the school at Idbury.
