This vital collection details almost 1.2 million properties eligible for land tax. Records include the name of the landowner, occupier, amount assessed and sometimes the name and/or description of the property. It is a useful starting point for locating relevant estate records and establishing the succession of tenancies and freehold. Most records cover 1798, but some extend up to 1811.
Poll books record the names of voters and the direction of their vote. Until 1872 only landholders could vote, so not everyone will be listed. Useful for discerning an ancestor's political leanings and landholdings. The collection is supplemented with other records relating to the vote.

Historical Description
At Nuffield, a village about four miles and a half from Bensington, and on the right of our road, was formerly a house of Trinitarian friars, founded before the 33rd year of king Edward III.
NUFFIELD is a parish and village, 4 miles south-east from Wallingford terminal station on a branch of the Great Western railway and 7 north-west from Henley, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Ewelme, petty sessional division of Henley, union of Henley, county district of Wallingford, rural deanery of Henley, archdeaconry and diocese of Oxford. The church of the Holy Trinity is a small but ancient structure of rubble and flint with stone dressings, of the Decorated period, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle and a wooden pyramidal tower at the west end of the aisle, containing 2 bells: the church, previous to 1850, was carefully restored by Mr. B. Ferrey, architect, and the chancel is modern, but the nave and aisles are part of the original fabric, and are separated by an arcade with round pillars, having moulded caps and brasses: the font is a plain stone cylinder of the 13th century and bears the following inscription, in Lombardic characters, round the upper part, the plinth being built into a pillar:
“FONTE SACRO LOTUM VEL MUNDAT GRACIA TOTUM
VEL NON EST SACRI MUNDACIO PLENA LAVACRI:”
here is a small brass, with half effigy of a priest and an inscription in Norman French to Beneit Engliss, c. 1360; there are 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1570. The living is a rectory, average yearly value of tithe rent-charge £403, with 58 ½ acres of glebe, value £45; net £228, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor and Sir James Hay Langham bart. held since 1888 by the Rev. Frederick William Orde Ward B.A. Wadham College, Oxford. Sir James Hay Langham bart. of Cottesbrooke Park, Northampton, who is lord of the manor, the President and Fellows of Magdalen College, Oxford, and William Thomas Twidell esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is light stock land, cultivated on the four-course or Norfolk system; subsoil, chalk. The area is 2,076 acres; rateable value, £1,261; the population in 1891 was 236.
