Historical Description
WOLVERCOTE (or Woolvercot), in Domesday called”Ulfgarcote,” is a parish and village, 2 ¾ miles north-by-west from Oxford and 2 ½ south-east from the Yarnton junction station on the Oxford and Cheltenham section of the Great Western railway, in the Mid division of the county, hundred of Wootton, petty sessional division of Bullingdon, county court district of Oxford, union of Woodstock and in the rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of Oxford. The village takes its name from Ulfgar or Wolfgar, a Saxon who dwelt here, and was given to the abbey of Godstow in 1171 by Bernardus de St. Walerico, of Beckley, who has married the daughter of John de St. John, of Stanton, the previous owner. The river Isis and the Oxford canal pass through the parish. The church of St. Peter, formerly a chapel attached to the church of St. Peter-in-the-East, Oxford, is a small and plainly-built edifice of stone, chiefly in the Late Rectilinear style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle with chapel, south porch and a western battlemented tower containing 5 bells: the chancel is of two bays, with a Rectilinear east window, the chancel arch is Transition Norman, and affixed to the impost was once an ancient hour-glass stand; the old pulpit of oak, with good Tudor panelling and tracery, has been replaced by a modern pulpit of stone; the nave arcade has five arches on circular piers; the roof is open-timbered, of Rectilinear date, as also is the south door: at the east end of the aisle, entered from the nave by a wide Decorated arch, is a low-roofed chapel, containing a large and fine altar tomb to Sir John Walter, Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer and Groom of the Chamber of King Charles II. who died at his house in the Savoy, London, 18 Nov. 1630, and was here buried; the tomb bears the effigy of the judge, fully robed and wearing his collar of SS.; on either side of him are the effigies of his two wives, while at the head are the kneeling figures of three daughters and at the foot of three sons; all the figures are painted and gilt: the tower is of three stages and has a west door, and above it a good three-light Rectilinear window; the roof is of stone, with stone ribs, and forms a pointed vault. In the churchyard, on the north side of the chancel, is a railed tomb to William Clarke esq. of this place, d. 9 May, 1847, and his fourth wife, Elizabeth (Dale), d. 1860; he was formerly of Middleton Stoney, Oxon, and belonged to an ancient family of long standing in the counties of Warwick, Northampton and Oxon: the church was restored in 1860, and affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1596; but the earlier entries were copied in the 17th century into the existing book. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £190, with residence, in the gift of the Warden and Fellows of Merton College, Oxford, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Frederick William Langton M.A. of Merton College, Oxford. There is a small Baptist chapel here, built in 1881. In this parish is a paper mill belonging to the University of Oxford, driven both by steam and water-power, and employing about 100 hands. The Duke of Marlborough, who is lord of the manor, Mr. H. O. King, St. John’s, Worcester and Merton Colleges, Oxford, and the University of Oxford, are the principal landowners. The soil is clay; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 961 acres; rateable value, £5,505; the population in 1891 was 845, of which 5 are included in the city of Oxford.
A School Board of 5 members was formed 28 Mar. 1874; T. Mallam, 126 High street, Oxford, clerk to the board.
