Historical Description

To the north of the village of Cotesmore is a seat of Sir William Lowther, Bart. This village contains 78 houses, and 416 inhabitants, of whom 122 were returned as being employed in trade and manufacture.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

COTTESMORE is a large parish with several well- built houses, in a beautiful situation upon a high table land, 2 miles east from Ashwell station on the Leicester and Peterborough and Nottingham and Kettering branches of the Midland railway, and 4 north-east from Oakham, in Alstoe hundred, Oakham union and county court district, rural deanery of Rutland (first portion), archdeaconry of Oakham and diocese of Peterborough. The road from Greetham to Oakham passes through the village. A small stream rises in the township and winds its way through Greetham towards Stamford, falling into the river Gwash. The church of St. Nicholas is a fine Early English building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch, and a tower, with broach spire, containing a clock and 5 bells: the western doorway is Norman: an organ was purchased in 1843: the interior was restored in 1866, and has 300 sittings, 150 being free. The register dates from the year 1655. The living is a rectory, with the chapelry of Barrow annexed, net yearly value £750, with residence, and including 746 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Earl of Gainsborough and held since 1888 by the Rev. Charles Edward Ellwood. The poor of Cottesmore share with those of Market Overton, Greetham and Barrow in the bequests of Thomas Byrch, dated 4 Mar. 1580, Mr. Durant and Lady Anne Harrington. The allotment system was established by the late R. W. Baker esq. in 1830. The “ Cottesmore Friendly Institution,” established here in 1832 has now (1899) a capital of £5,126 16s. The Cottesmore Hunt, which takes its name from this place, has long had great celebrity; William Baird esq. of Deanscroft, Oakham, is the present master, and the kennels, now in the parish of Barleythorpe, on the Ashwell road, are considered the most complete in the kingdom. Cottesmore Hall is the seat of Emily Dowager Countess of Lonsdale. The Earl of Gainsborough is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is red, strong and stony; subsoil, kale and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, hay and roots. The area is 2,504 acres; rateable value, £2,526; the population in 1891 was 431 in the township and 536 in the parish, which includes 105 in Barrow, which will be found under a separate heading.
