HAMBLETON is a village and parish, 3 miles northeast from Manton station on the Syston and Peterborough and Nottingham and Kettering branches of the Midland railway, 3 east-south-east from Oakham, in the hundred of Martinsley, union and county court district of Oakham, rural deanery of Rutland (first portion), archdeaconry of Oakham and diocese of Peterborough; it is divided into three portions, named Upper, Nether and Middle Hambleton. The church and village stand in the first-mentioned portion, on a commanding height, the views from which are of a pleasing and Varied character. The church of St. Peter is a building of stone, chiefly in the Early English style, with a Perpendicular clerestory, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a western tower with low octagonal spire, relieved by canopied dormers in the cardinal faces, and containing 5 bells, dated respectively 1887, 1610, 1621, 1861, and the fifth, originally the fourth, also 1887: in the church are various monuments of the last century to the Hippisley family: the church was restored in 1892 by W. G. Marshall esq. at a cost of £500, and in 1895 the chapel in the north aisle was refitted and dedicated in memory of the Rev. George Gibb, late vicar (1885-93) by his widow. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, separated from that of Braunston in 1885, net yearly value £163, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Lincoln, and held since 1893 by the Rev. Daniel Eliott Young M.A. of Pembroke College, Oxford. There are a few small charities:—Lady Anne Harrington's dole of £10 to the tenants of the Lordshold, and Clayton’s charity of £3 10s. for education. A weekly market and a yearly fair were anciently held here, but have long been obsolete. Hambleton House, the seat of Stephen Cooper esq. (a minor), erected in 1881, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, with stabling of the same character, standing in grounds of seven acres extent. On the slope of the valley of the Gwash, on the south side of the village, is an Elizabethan building of Ketton stone, formerly the residence of the Barker family, but now occupied as a farmhouse. George Henry Finch esq. M.P. of Burley-on-the-Hill, who is lord of the manor, the trustees of Stephen Cooper (a minor) and Edward Nathaniel Conant esq. of Lyndon Hall, are the chief landowners. The soil varies; subsoil, ironstone and kale, and clay underneath. The land is chiefly in pasture. The crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area is 2,852 acres of land and 10 of water; rateable value, £2,153; the population in 1891 was 235.

Parochial School (mixed), built by subscription on land given by the late George Finch esq. for 48 children; average attendance, 46.
