At this village George Ilson, a Romish priest, founded a small hospital in the reign of James the First, forsix aged persons of both sexes, who had never been married. This foundation is still preserved, each person receiving 6l. per annum.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

MORCOTT is a pleasant village and parish, with a station on the London and North Western railway, 2 miles south-west from Luffenham station on the Midland and London and North Western railway, which passes through a tunnel in this parish half a mile in length, 4 east-by-north from Uppingham and 100 from London, in the hundred of Wrangdike, union and county court district of Uppingham, rural deanery of Rutland (third portion), archdeaconry of Oakham and diocese of Peterborough. The church of St. Mary is a building of stone of the Norman and Perpendicular periods, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles and short spire covered with lead, and containing a clock and 4 bells, two of which are dated respectively 1637 and 1726, the others being undated: the nave is the most perfect example of Norman work in the county, the arcades being still in fine preservation, but the chancel is Perpendicular: in the church is a very remarkable monument to the founder, William de Overton, with an inscription in Norman French: the organ was presented by the late Samuel Richard Fydell esq. of Morcott Hall, in 1867: the church was thoroughly restored in 1874-5, at a cost of £1,350, and affords 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1546. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £330, with residence, and including 15 acres of glebe, in the gift of and held since 1892 by the Rev. Brabazon Chambre Hallowes M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. The Baptist chapel here, built in 1710, was endowed with £600 in 1807, by the Rev. W. Curtis: there is also a Wesleyan Methodist chapel. There is a charity of £1 yearly, left by Edward Claypole. A hospital was founded by Mr. George Gilson, a Catholic, in the reign of James I. for the maintenance of six poor aged people, two of whom must have dwelt for 5 years in the parish of Morcott; under a new scheme of the Charity Commissioners six alms people now receive 10s. per week, and there are also four pensioners who receive 8s. per week. Morcott Hall, a mansion of stone, is the seat of Mrs. Dawson Rowley, lady of the manor. The principal landowners are Mrs. Dawson Rowley, G. F. Rowley esq. the Marquess of Exeter and the Earl of Ancaster P.C. The soil is various; subsoil, clay, stone and sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips and pasture. The acreage is 1,363; rateable value, £2,808; the population in 1891 was 450.

National School (mixed), erected in 1825, at a cost of £400, wholly defrayed by the late S. R. Fydell esq. & now supported by Mrs. Dawson Rowley, for no children; average attendance, 75.
