Historical Description

Uppingham is a market town, chiefly consisting of one street, and situated on an eminence, from whence it is supposed to have derived its name; the houses are well built, and the streets clean and neat. As it is not mentioned in Doomsday Book, it is consequently of no great antiquity; though it began to be of some repute in the reign of Henry VIII. as appears from a statute passed in that reign, obliging the standards of weights and measures for the county to be kept here, which has been ever since continued. The Church, which is an ancient gothic structure, contains many monuments, several of which are very elegant and of great antiquity.

Here is a noble Free-school, where youth are qualified for the university; also an Hospital for poor aged persons of both sexes, who are supplied with all the necessaries of life. Both these charities were established in the year 1584 by the Rev. Mr. Johnson, the founder of the free-school at Okeham.

Uppingham has a good weekly market on Wednesdays, and two annual fairs, on the 7th of March and 7th of July, for horses, cattle, and cloth; and at a place called the Brand, about a mile to the south of the town, are annual horse-races.

The town is situated 89 miles from London, and consists, according to the late population act, of 277 houses, and 1393 inhabitants, viz. 674 males and 719 females, of whom 281 were returned as being employed in trade and manufacture.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

UPPINGHAM is a market and union town or parish and the head of a county court district, with a terminal station on a branch line 3 3/4 miles in length, opened in 1894, from Seaton junction on the London and North Western and Great Northern joint railway and is 4 miles south from Manton and Uppingham station on the Syston and Peterborough and Nottingham and Kettering branches of the Midland railway, 6 1/2 south from Oakham, 12 west-south-west from Stamford, 19 east from Leicester and 90 by road from London, in the hundred of Martinsley, rural deanery of Rutland (third portion), archdeaconry of Oakham and diocese of Peterborough. The town consists principally of one long street, running from east to west, and containing some good houses, shops and inns; it is paved and lighted with gas from works on the Glaston road, established in 1837, the property of a private company. The water supply is obtained from works on the Stockerston road, also belonging to a company. The church of SS. Peter and Paul, standing near the Market place, is an ancient building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, north and south porches and an embattled western tower, with lofty spire, containing 8 bells, dating from 1772 to 1804, and a new clock, provided in 1898 in commemoration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee: in 1861 the church was greatly enlarged and thoroughly restored at a cost of over £6,000, a new hammer-beam roof of oak, with beautifully carved figures of angels being placed over the nave and a new chancel roof of oak with angel corbels erected: the ancient pulpit is of oak richly carved: the font is of serpentine marble with oak canopy and the bench ends are elaborately carved: in 1893 a stained east window was placed in the chancel as a memorial to the Rev. the Worshipful William Wales M.A. rector here (1859-79) and sometime Chancellor of Peterborough, at a cost of £375: a stained window, the gift of W. M. Compton esq. was erected in the tower in 1894: the organ was restored and enlarged in 1894 at a cost of nearly £400: a burial ground was purchased in 1862. The register dates from the year 1571 and is in good condition. Bishop Jeremy Taylor was once rector of the parish and there are many entries in the parish register in his handwriting. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £725, chiefly arising from 266 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Peterborough, and held since 1890 by the Ven. Reginald Prideaux Lightfoot M.A. of Balliol College, Oxford, archdeacon of Oakham, and surrogate.

Here are Congregational, Wesleyan and Baptist chapels.

The Stamford, Spalding and Boston (branch) Bank Limited, in the High street, is a substantial building of Casterton and Bath stone. Over the entrance are the Stamford arms, with the name and date carved in scroll, the arms of Spalding and Boston appearing on the facade of the bank. The Leicestershire Banking Company’s (branch) Bank, in the Market place, is a building of Doulton and Ketton stone, from designs by Messrs. Goddard and Paget, of Leicester. During the removal of the old buildings an oak beam was discovered bearing the date 1628. The Mutual Improvement Society, founded in 1861, had, in 1899, 210 members. The Institute and Lecture hall, a substantial building of stone on the London road, has a library and reading and class rooms; the library contains about 2,740 volumes, and is well supplied with daily papers and periodicals; lectures and entertainments are given during the winter season, and there is now a billiard room. The market is held on Wednesday and is well attended. Fairs for cattle are held on the second Wednesday in March and July. There are charities of about £53 annual value for distribution left by the Rev.-Standish and E. Fawkener.

About a mile from the town on the Leicester road is a mound, being the remains of military works, called Castle Hill; from the summit are fine views of the surrounding country. The Earl of Gainsborough is lord of the manor. Here is also a small rectorial manor, of which the rector for the time being is lord. The landowners are the Ear! of Gainsborough, Lord Norton P.O., K.C.M.G. and the rector. The parish comprises 1,463 acres; rateable value, £12,248; in 1891 the population was 2,559, including 70 officers and inmates in the workhouse.

In the year 1854 Uppingham school began to be gradually remodelled, on the principle of educating the scholars according to individual requirements, & adding modern languages to the previous course: at that period there was one boarding house & about 30 boarders: there are now thirteen boarding houses (including the school-house) & 415 boarders, exclusive of the Lower school; the income from the foundation is about £1,000 yearly: a noble school-room & chapel have been erected: the Lower school, as now conducted, was affiliated to the Upper school, by a scheme of 1875; each boy in the school is allowed a study to himself & a cubicle; the number of boys in each form is kept down to an average of 20 throughout the school, & in consequence of this the school has attained its present rank & size, having steadily advanced as these facts became gradually known: the cost of the buildings raised of late years exceeds £100,000: there are three exhibitions vacant every year, of the value respectively of £60, £50 & £40, tenable at some university, or other place of learned, scientific or professional education, for three years: it is required that candidates shall have been at Uppingham School for the two years previous to the election: there are also sixteen exhibitions at the following colleges in Cambridge:—St. John’s, Clare, Emmanuel & Sidney Sussex; four at each, about £22 yearly, to which scholars from Uppingham & Oakham have the preference: the trustees assign out of the tuition fees £100 annually for prizes: there is an examination twice every year, in certain selected English books, with questions on language & literature, prizes up to £5 are awarded if sufficient merit be shewn; other prizes up to £4 are open to boys in the second hundred of the school; & prizes of £3 to boys in the third hundred: an examination is held about the end of March, annually, for six scholarships, two of the value of £70 per annum, open to boys who have not yet joined the school; two of the value of £50 per annum each, & two of the value of £30 per annum each, tenable at the school; there are also two Rutland scholarships of the value of £25 per annum each, tenable for two years at either Oakham or Uppingham school. Connected with the foundation is a hospital; annuities to the amount of £12 each are given from the funds to decayed tradesmen, widows & others.

National (mixed & infants), erected in 1868, & enlarged in 1894, for 240 boys & girls & 150 infants; average attendance, 165 boys & girls & 101 infants.
