Historical Description

WHISSENDINE (or Wichingedine) is a large parish and scattered village, in a hilly district, on the borders of Leicestershire, 1 1/2 miles south from Whissendine station on the Syston and Peterborough and Nottingham and Kettering branches of the Midland railway, 5 north-west from Oakham, 6 east from Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, and 98 from London, in the hundred of Alstoe, Oakham union and county court district, rural deanery of Rutland (first portion), archdeaconry of Oakham and diocese of Peterborough. Two streams rising in the parish, unitedly form the Whissendine brook. The church of St. Andrew, situated on an acclivity, is a building of stone, in the Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, transepts, south porch and a Decorated western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 5 bells, dated respectively 1785, 1609, 1872, 1897, and the tenor 1609; the latest of these was hung by public subscription in commemoration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee: in the church is an ancient carved oak screen removed from the old chapel of St. John’s College, Cambridge, and placed at the entrance to the south transept: the organ was erected in 1882 at a cost of £200, defrayed by subscriptions: the church was restored about 1870, under the direction of Mr. G. G. Scott and Mr. J. Goddard, of Leicester, architects, at a cost of about £2,300, and affords 220 sittings. The register dates from the year 1637. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value, augmented by Foster’s charity, £155, with residence, and including 29 acres of glebe, in the gift of and held since 1864 by the Rev. Edward Larkin Home M.A. of Clare College, Cambridge. Here are Primitive and Wesleyan Methodist chapels. The poor’s land of 16a. 2r. at Clawson, produces £28 yearly, and a charity left by the Rev. Thomas Hurst, a former vicar, produces £1 7s. 4d. yearly. Reading and recreation rooms, erected in 1886, are open during the winter months; they contain a library of 170 volumes and a bagatelle table &c.; there are about 70 members. The Manor House, a fine old mansion, formerly the residence of the Harborough family, stands near the church, and is now occupied as a farm-house. John Gretton esq. of Burton-on-Trent, who is lord of the manor, the Earl of Ancaster P.C. Col. Arthur Maurice Blake C.B., V.D. of Danesbury Welwyn, Herts, the Governors of Browne’s Hospital, Stamford, the trustees of Smith Fowler esq. and Mr. Ackroyd are the principal landowners. The soil is heavy, strong land; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, roots, and pasture land. The area is 4,035 acres; assessable value, £5,192; the population in 1891 was 723.
