Historical Description
ADDERLEY is a small village and parish on the Cheshire border of the county, with a station on the Market Drayton and Crewe branch of the Great Western railway, 4 miles north from Market Drayton, comprising the townships of Adderley, Seavington (ecclesiastically) and Spoonley, in the Northern division of the county, Drayton division of North Bradford hundred, Market Drayton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Hodnet, archdeaconry of Salop and diocese of Lichfield; the Shropshire Union Canal passes through the parish. The church of St. Peter, rebuilt, with the exception of the tower and chapel, about 1800, is an edifice of stone in a debased modern style, consisting of chancel, north chapel, nave, transept, and a western tower with pinnacles containing a clock and 3 bells: there are several monuments and tablets to the Needham family, and a monument to Sir Corbet Corbet bart. of Stoke-upon-Tern and Adderley, who died March 31, 1823, and three brasses—one with a mutilated figure of an ecclesiastic, apparently a bishop, c. 1390; another, with effigies, to Sir Robert Needham, 1550, and Agnes (Maynwaring), his wife, 1560, with nine children: the third is an inscription to John Podmore, rector, 1673: under the family pew belonging to A. P. Heywood-Lonsdale esq. of Shavington Hall, is a vault used as a mausoleum for the Kilmorey family, Earls and Viscounts Kilmorey; there is also a curious font, probably Norman. The register dates from the year 1600. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £538, net £374, including 16 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Henry Reginald Corbet esq. and held since 1863 by the Rev. Athelstan Corbet M. A. of Magdalene College, Cambridge. The charities amount to £30 yearly, arising from money left in 1725 by Thomas Reynolds and invested in £2 ¾ per Cents. Adderley Hall, in a park of 208 acres, is the seat of Henry Reginald Corbet esq. D. L., J. P. lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is sand and clay; subsoil, gravel and sand. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and turnips. The area is 3,938 acres of land and 43 of water; rateable value, £5,207; the population in 1891 was 468.
School (mixed), built in 1850, for 80 children; average attendance, 6. There is a house for the master.
