This vital collection details almost 1.2 million properties eligible for land tax. It is a useful starting point for locating relevant estate records and establishing the succession of tenancies and freehold. Most records cover 1798, but some extend up to 1811.

Historical Description
BADGER is a township, parish and village in the borough and liberty of Wenlock, on a small tributary of the river Worfe, 5 miles south-west from Albrighton station on the Wolverhampton and Wellington section of the Great Western railway, 6 south-east from Madeley and 7 north-east from Bridgnorth, in the Northern division of the county, Shifnal union and petty sessional division, Madeley county court district and division, Brimstree hundred, rural deanery of Wenlock, archdeaconry of Ludlow and diocese of Hereford. The church of St. Giles, rebuilt in 1834, is an edifice of stone, in the Gothic styles consisting of chancel, nave and south chapel, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 3 bells: the south porch, constructed of oak, was added in 1886: the east window was presented by the patron and the oaken seats by the late Mrs. Chandos Pole, of Stableford House and the carved pulpit by the late Canon Capel Cure: there are two pictures presented by Colonel A. Capel-Cure, being copies of the Guido “Annunciation” and Titian’s “Ecce Homo”: there are three monuments by Flaxman, Chantrey and Gibson, to Isaac Hawkins Brown esq. of this parish and M. P. for Bridgnorth, d. 1818 and to Mrs. Chaney, grandmother of Colonel Alfred Capel Cure, of The Hall: the church was restored in 1886 by Colonel A. Capel Cure. The register dates from the year 1662. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £199, net yearly value £246, including 25 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Colonel A. Capel Cure, and held since 1880 by the Rev. Charles Henry Leigh-Lye M. A. of Wadham College, Oxford. The charities amount to £4 6s. of which £3 6s. was left by will in 1849 by Mrs. Pigott, and £1 in 1,838 and 1871 by the Rev. Thomas F. Boddington and the Rev. William Smith, former rectors; there is also a dole of £1 yearly arising from a charge on the estate. Badger Hall, the seat of Colonel A. Capel Cure, is a modern mansion of brick with an attached chapel erected in 1886; in the grounds adjoining the house is a beautifully wooded dell, called “Badger Dingle,” through which a small stream flows. Colonel A. Capel Cure is lord of the manor and owns the whole parish. The soil is sandy and loamy; the subsoil is red sandstone. The chief crops are barley and wheat. The area is 914 acres; rateable value, £1,236; the population in 1891 was 155.
