Historical Description
The pleasant village of Bildas, or Buldwas, where one of the bishops of Chester founded a convent for monks of the order of Savigny, about the latter end of the reign of Henry the First. Many parts of this edifice is still standing, from the appearance of which it must originally have been a stately and magnificent structure.
BUILDWAS is a parish and village on the Ironbridge and Shrewsbury Road, with a station forming the junction of the Severn Valley and Wellington and Craven Arms lines of the Great Western railway; it is 3 ½ miles north from Much Wenlock, 2 north-west from Ironbridge, 11 south-east from Shrewsbury and 7 south from Wellington, in the Mid division of the county, Wellington division of South Bradford hundred, petty sessional division of Ironbridge, Madeley union and county court district, Wrockwardine rural deanery, archdeaconry of Salop and diocese of Lichfield. The parish is bisected by the river Severn, over which there is a noble cast-iron bridge, having a span of 130 feet, one of the earliest structures erected by Thomas Telford F. R. S. the eminent engineer. The church of the Holy Trinity, rebuilt in 1720, is an edifice of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western turret containing 3 bells: the chancel was restored in 1864 in memory of Captain Herbert Moseley, and has stained east window: the nave was new-roofed in 1877: the old oak pews were converted into open sittings in 1884 and an organ added in 1885: the pulpit is old and has carved panels:, there are sittings for 180 persons. The register dates from the year 1659. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £112, including glebe with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late Walter Moseley esq. and held since 1891 by the Rev. Alfred Bonney M. A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The charities are: £5 yearly charged on an estate in the parish of Much Wenlock, left in 1700 by Mrs. Ann Lacon: £2 15s. the proceeds of £100 invested in Consols and £3 5s. 6d. left by Mrs. Margaret Edwardes; another charity of £3 5s. 6d. yearly is derived from £109 5s. 9d. reduced £3 per cent. Annuities; the proceeds of £100 directed by the will of the late Mrs. Pritchard, of Broseley, to be invested in government securities, the interest to be yearly applied for the purchase of warm clothing for ten poor women, to be given on St. Thomas’ Day. Near here are the ruins of the abbey of SS. Mary and Chad, founded by Roger de Clinton, bishop of Lichfield (1128-49), for monks of the Cistercian order, and colonised from Savigny; the remains of the monastery, built in the reign of Stephen on the site of an ancient hermitage, afford a fine example of the Later Norman and Early English styles: the abbot’s house, a building of the 13th century, is the residence of the Misses Moseley. Buildwas Park, the property of the trustees of the late Walter Moseley esq. who are lords of the manor and sole landowners, is a modern Elizabethan mansion, built by the late owner’s father on the site of a more ancient building, and is at present occupied by Walter William Graham Philipps esq.: there is a remarkable avenue of yew trees in the grounds. The soil is stiff clay, alternating with rich loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are cereals, with a good deal of pasture land. The area is 2,126 acres of land and 55 of water; rateable value, £2,606; the population in 1891 was 228.
