Historical Description

CHETTON is a township and parish on the high road from Bridgnorth to Ludlow, 3 ½ miles south-west from Bridgnorth station on the Great Western railway. The parish comprises the townships of Chetton, Eudon Burnell, Eudon George, Faintree and Criddon, with the chapelry of Loughton, in the Southern division of the county, Chelmarsh division of Stottesdon hundred, Bridgnorth union, petty sessional division and county court district, Bridgnorth rural deanery, archdeaconry of Ludlow and diocese of Hereford. The church of St. Giles is an ancient edifice of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, and containing 6 bells: there is a brass erected by the parishioners to the Ven. William Vickers, rector here from 1813 and archdeacon of Salop from 1830, d. 1851: the church was restored in 1891-92 in memory of W. C. Pardoe Purton esq. J. P. of Faintree: the east window has been filled with stained glass as a memorial of the Rev. Canon J. S. Purton, rector of the parish from 1861-91: two windows were also erected, one by the parishioners and one by Mrs. Purton, in remembrance of Cecil Purton esq. and the porch was built by Mrs. Purton, in memory of her father: a new organ was erected at a cost of £230 collected by subscription. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, united to the rectories of Glazeley and Deuxhill; average tithe rent-charge £560, joint net yearly value £320, including 31 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Thomas Martin Southwell esq. of Bridgnorth, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Alfred Gray M. A. of University College, Oxford. Charities: —Mrs. Dorothy Holland, of Sidnald, in 1723, left £20; Richard Pardoe, of Birmingham, in 1760, left £100; Thomas Rawlins, of Criddon, in 1824, left £20; Dorothy, wife of Charles Cooper, of London, in 1833, gave £10; John Minton, in 1. 856, left £19 19s.; Miss Cooper, of Hampstead, gave £10, the interest to be distributed in bread among the poor; Henry Aston, of Walsbatch, in 1736, left £20, the interest to be given to the school; Mrs. Mary Pardoe, of Faintree, left £25, the interest for the school; Thomas Pardoe, of Faintree, in 1802, left £50, the interest also for the school; Mrs. Sarah Pardoe, in 1805, gave £50, and at her death left £25, reduced by legacy duty to £22 10s. the interest for the school; William Purton, of Faintree, left by will £200, the interest of which should be applied, half to school, and half to the purchase of clothing for the poor of this parish; the Ven. Archdeacon Vickers, late rector, left in 1851 a sum of £200, the interest to be given, half to the school and half to the parish coal club; the present yearly value of the charities is about £20. Faintree Hall, the seat of Mrs. Purton, is a building of red brick. There is no lord of the manor, the lands being all freehold. W. Pritchard Gordon esq. J. P. of Stanmore, Bridgnorth, Mrs. Purton, James Stoddart esq. of Bridgnorth, and Rev. Thomas Aston, of Habberley Rectory, near Shrewsbury, are the chief landowners. The soil is clayey; the subsoil is similar. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, peas and roots. The area is 4,038 acres; rateable value (except Loughton), £3,468; the population of the parish in 1891 was 456, exclusive of Loughton.

A School Board of 7 members was formed 22 May, 1878.
