Historical Description

CLIVE is a township, parish and village, 1 mile east of the road from Shrewsbury to Wem and Chester, 1 mile north-east from Yorton station (which is in the parish) on the Shrewsbury and Crewe branch of the London and North Western railway, 7 miles north from Shrewsbury and 3 south from Wem, in the Northern division of the county, Albrighton division of Brimstree hundred, liberty of Shrewsbury, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Wem, rural deanery of Wem, archdeaconry of Salop and diocese of Lichfield. The church of All Saints is an ancient building of stone, with some Norman portions, consisting of chancel, nave, small vestry, organ chamber, north porch, and a western tower with spire, containing 6 bells; the east window and others are stained; the organ was the gift of the late J. Hall esq. of Holbrook; the church was restored in 1849, and again in 1885, at a cost of about £5,000, which was defrayed by the patron, J. J. Bibby esq. D. L., J. P. and Thomas Meares esq. when a north porch, sanctuary, vestry and organ chamber were added; the tower with spire and baptistery was a further addition made in 1892-4 by the patron, in memory of his late wife; the font being a reproduction of that in the parish church of Dewsbury (Yorks), in which she was baptized. The register of baptisms and burials dates from 1611; marriages, 1852. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £77, net yearly value £137, including glebe, with residence, in the gift of James Jenkinson Bibby esq. and held since 1873 by the Rev. John Cooper Wood M. A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. Here are Congregational and Primitive Methodist chapels. Clive Hall, the property and residence of Thomas Meares esq. pleasantly situated in the centre of the village, and commanding delightful views of the country around, is an interesting and ancient building dating from the 14th century; it was in 1640 the birthplace of Wycherley, the dramatist; it was restored and beautified by its present owner in 1874. Shooters’ Hill House is the property and residence of George Henry Thorniley esq. J. P.; the house, which stands in its own extensive grounds, is pleasantly situated on an eminence near the Shrewsbury road, and commands charming views of the surrounding country. Sansaw, a noble structure of brick in the revived Queen Anne style, is the seat of Frank Bibby esq. J. P. James Jenkinson Bibby esq. of Hardwicke Grange, Hadnall, Shrewsbury, Thomas Meares esq. and Geo. H. Thorniley esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is mostly sandy loam; subsoil, marl or red sandstone. About half a mile south of the village are extensive freestone quarries. The chief crops are wheat and barley, but a large portion of the land is in pasture. The area is 1,198 acres; rateable value, £3,722; the population in Church School (mixed), for the parishes of Broughton, Clive & Grinshill, built in 1873, for 230 children; average attendance, 133; there is a house for the teachers.
