Historical Description

CONDOVER is a large parish and village, on the Cound Brook, with a station 1 mile north-west from the village on the Shrewsbury and Hereford section of the London and North-Western and Great Western joint railway, and 4 ½ miles south from Shrewsbury. The civil parish includes the hamlets of Condover, Annscroft, Darlington (these three now ecclesiastically separate), Bayston Hill, Chatford, Boreton, Great and Little Lyth, Ryton, Westley, Wheathall, Norton, Gonsall, Sytch, Allfield and Bombere, in the Western division of the county, Condover division of Condover hundred, union of Atcham, Shrewsbury county court district, rural deanery of Condover, archdeaconry of Salop and diocese of Lichfield. The village is ancient, and retains the same name as appears in Domesday Book. The Petty Sessions for this division are held at the Magistrates' room, Dorrington, the first Friday in each month. The church of St. Mary and St. Andrew, consists of chancel, nave, transepts, north porch and western tower, of which the north transept forms a remnant of the original Norman structure. The nave, with its fine oak roof and the tower, date from 1662: the chancel was rebuilt and a mortuary chapel added at the expense of Reginald Cholmondeley esq. in 1868; the remainder of the church was restored in 1878: the mortuary chapel contains monuments to Dame Jane Norton, who died 1640, with kneeling effigies of herself and her husband and also of her brother, Sir Roger Owen and her father, Judge Owen, who built the hall; to Roger Owen and his daughter (1746) by Roubiliac; to Major Thomas Owen, who died 1864, and to Alice, wife of Reginald Cholmondeley, 1868, these last both carved by Mr. Cholmondeley himself. The chancel also contains a fine monument with recumbent effigies of two members of the Scriven family of Frodesley, probably Thomas Scriven, who died 1587 and Elizabeth his wife. There are stained windows to the memory of Major Owen, various members of the Daker Harley family, and to the wife and sister of E. W. Smythe Owen. The tower contains a clock and peal of eight bells, rehung in 1894: there are sittings for 500. The register dates from the year 1570. The living is a vicarage, tithe rent-charge £150, gross yearly value £220, including 3 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Reginald Cholmondeley esq. and held since 1892 by the Rev. Thomas Auden M. A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge F. S. A. There are charities for the benefit of the church and the poor of about £80 yearly value. Condover Hall, the property of Reginald Cholmondeley esq. D. L., J. P. lord of the manor and chief landowner, was built by Thomas Owen, a native of this place, Queen’s Sergeant in 1593 and a Justice of the Common Pleas from 1594 till his death, 21 Dec. 1598; he was buried in Westminster Abbey, where there is a fine monument: the mansion, a perfect specimen of the architecture of that period, is situated near the church and village in a beautiful park of 335 acres, and is at present occupied by Captain Reginald Harry Cholmondeley: the Cound brook flows through the park. The soil is varied, generally light; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips and clover. There is a great proportion of grazing land. The area of the entire parish is 7,542 acres; rateable value, £19,539; the population of the civil parish in 1891 was 1,679; of the ecclesiastical, 871.

School (mixed), built in 1882, by Reginald Cholmondeley esq. for 120 children; average attendance, 90.
