Historical Description
CORELEY is a parish and village, 3 ½ miles west-by-north from Neen Solars station on the Tenbury and Bewdley branch of the Great Western railway, 5 north-northeast from Tenbury and 4 west-by-south from Cleobury Mortimer, in the Southern division of the county, Cleobury division of the hundred of Stottesdon, union and petty sessional division of Burford, county court district of Cleobury Mortimer, rural deanery of Burford (west division), archdeaconry of Ludlow and diocese of Hereford. The church of St. Peter is a modern structure of brick, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an ancient Early English western tower of stone, with a wooden spire covered with zinc, and containing 3 bells. The register dates from the year 1543. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-chargel £136, net yearly value £160, including 64 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Mrs. Burnett Stuart, and held since 1876 by the Rev. James Barclay Joyce M. A. of Keble College, Oxford, and J. P. Salop. The charities are (1st) “the poor’s land,” amounting to £11. 7s. yearly, which is returned in fees to those school children who have made over 300 attendances in the year; (2nd) “Longmore’s,” the income of which, amounting to £14 16s. 8d. is distributed weekly in bread.
In this parish are coal pits and a stone quarry, where a quantity of granite is being worked, and there is also ironstone. The Earl of Craven is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is stiff clay and gravel; subsoil, clay, rock and coal. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and beans. The area is 2,175 acres; rateable value, £2,430; the population in 1891 was 584 in the civil and 360 in the ecclesiastical parish.
Doddington is an ecclesiastical district, formed partly out of this parish, partly out of Hopton Wafre, and partly out of Cleobury Mortimer, and will be found under the latter heading.
