Land Tax Redemption (1798-1811)

Historical Description

FITZ, with the townships of Grafton and Mytton, is a village and parish on the river Severn, 2 miles south-west from Leaton station on the Shrewsbury and Chester section of the Great Western railway and 6 north-west from Shrewsbury, in the Western division of the county, Albrighton division of Pimhill hundred, Albrighton petty sessional division, Atcham union, Shrewsbury county court district and in the rural deanery of Shrewsbury, archdeaconry of Salop and diocese of Lichfield. The church of St. Peter and St. Paul, pleasantly seated on the highest ground about 290 feet above the sea level and 90 feet above the river Severn, and erected in the year 1722 on the foundations of the Norman church, is an edifice of brick, consisting of nave of two bays, with eastern apse, south aisle and a western tower with pinnacles, containing 2 bells: the church was thoroughly restored in 1879, at the expense of the late Mrs. Carew, of Mytton Hall, and Richard Middleton esq. of Fitz Manor: there are 240 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, commuted tithe rent-charge £266, net yearly value £260, including 23 ½ acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Sir Offley Wakeman bart. and held since 1880 by the Rev. William Parry D. C. L. of Hertford College, Oxford. Here is a small Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1863. Fitz Manor, from the grounds of which most extensive views of the surrounding country can be seen, is the residence of Richard Middleton esq. who is lord of the manor. Sir Offley Wakeman bart. D. L.. J. P. and R. Middleton esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is varied, from strong to light loam; subsoil, chiefly clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, peas and roots. The area is 1,551 acres of land and 36 of water; rateable value, £3,198; the population in 1891 was 303.
