Historical Description

At Hodnet is Hodnet Hall, the seat of Richard Heber Esq. The Rectory, a new and very handsome building, in the Gothic style, is the residence of the Rev. Reginald Heber, the author of Palestine. The Rectory is valued at 20001. per annum.

HODNET is a parish, township and village, on the main road from Shrewsbury to Market Drayton, with a station on the Great Western Railway Company’s main line from London to Manchester, 181 miles by rail and 166 by road from London, 12 north from Wellington, 6 south-west from Market Drayton, 13 north-east from Shrewsbury, 11 ½ north-west from Newport and 7 east from Wem; it is in the Northern division of the county, Drayton division of North Bradford hundred, Market Drayton and Wem unions, Market Drayton county court district and petty sessional division, rural deanery of Hodnet, archdeaconry of Salop and diocese of Lichfield. The church of St. Luke is an ancient building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an octagonal embattled western tower containing a clock and 6 bells: there are several stained windows and a beautiful monument by Chantry to Dr. Reginald Heber, born at Malpas, Cheshire, 21 April, 1783, rector of this parish for upwards of fifteen years (1807-23) and subsequently Bishop of Calcutta, 1823-6, who died at Trichinopoly, 3 April, 1826: the church was thoroughly restored in 1883, the cost being met by voluntary contributions. The register dates from the year 1657. The living is a rectory, with the chapel of Weston annexed, average tithe rent-charge £1,500, net £1,200, including 21 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Algernon Charles and Mrs. Heber-Percy, and held since 1873 by the: Rev. Richard Hugh Cholmondeley M. A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, and rural dean of Hodnet. There is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1859. Here are the headquarters of the D Company 2nd Volunteer Battalion the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry, commanded by Capt. Thos. Whitfield, numbering about 70 men. The Manchester and Liverpool District Banking Company have a sub-branch here, open on Friday. Fairs were formerly held here, but have fallen into disuse. There is a Smithfield for the sale of cattle, close to the railway station; the sales are held every alternate Tuesday. Hodnet Hall, a handsome modern Elizabethan brick mansion, situated near to the village, is the seat of Algernon C. Heber-Percy esq. D. L., J. P. who is lord of the manor and principal landowner. An important feature in Hodnet Hall is its museum, which has a fine collection of animals’ heads, birds and foreign military weapons, collected by members of the family. The soil is chiefly light sandy loam; subsoil, principally red sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area of Hodnet, with Marchamley, Peplow and Wollerton, is 9,950 acres of land and 75 of water; rateable value of the parish £17,480; the population in 1891 was 1,587 in the civil and 1,859 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Little Bolas, or Bolas Parva, is a township in Market Drayton union, 5 miles south-south-east from Hodnet, Charles Edward Grey Hatherell J. P. of Radford House, near Leamington, is principal landowner. The area is 549a. 1r. 15p.
