Kinlet Marriage & Divorce Records

Provides a reference to order copies of marriage certificates from the national registrar of births, marriages and deaths – the General Register Office.
Banns registers list the names of people who intended to marry by the system of calling banns, in which the bride and groom's name were called for three weeks at church. At these callings objections could be made to a marriage. They record the bride and groom's parish of residence, which may be recorded differently in the marriage register.

Historical Description
KINLET is a parish on the western bank of the river Severn, 3 miles south-west from Highley station on the Severn Valley branch of the Great Western railway and 4 ½ north-east from Cleobury Mortimer, and about 5 ½ north from Cleobury Mortimer station, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Stottesdon, Cleobury Mortimer petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Stottesdon, archdeaconry of Ludlow and diocese of Hereford. The church of St. John the Baptist is a venerable cruciform building of stone, in the Early Norman style, consisting of chancel, clerestories nave of three bays, aisles, transepts, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing a clock and 6 bells; there are several fine mural monuments to Sir William Childe kt. LL. D. ob. 8 May, 1678, and Dame Anne, his wife, daughter and heiress of Rowland Lacon esq. lord of this manor, ob. 28 June, 1693; Thomas Childe, d. 12 April, 1708; William Lacon Childe M. P. for Salop d. 14 Dec. 1757 and Catherine (Pytts), his wife, d. 29 Nov. 1763; William Childe, d. 3 Feb. 1824, and Annabella, his wife, d. 21 Jan. 1816; Catherine Lacon Childe, d. 2 June, 1760; Catherine Baldwyn, d. 6 July, 1838 and Charles Baldwyn, d. 18 Sept. 1811; there is also a canopied tomb of alabaster marble with kneeling figures to Sir George Blount kt. and lord of Kinlet, a distinguished soldier and high sheriff of Salop, ob. 1581; a memorial to William Otter D. D. vicar of Kinlet 1816 to 1836, d. Aug. 20, 1840 and Nancy, his wife, and two altar tombs of the 15th century; the east window, inserted under the direction of the Rev. John Brickdale Blakeway, author (1831) of the “Sheriffs of Shropshire,” and vicar in 1814, contains some of the ancient heraldic glass in the original window commemorating the successive families who have been lords of Kinlet; there is also some very curious old stained glass in the windows of the transept; the church was restored and re-opened by the Bishop of Hereford on 9th June, 1893: the chancel and transept were restored by Miss Childe as a memorial of her sister; a handsome carved oak chancel screen was erected; the lectern was the gift of Wm. Childe Pemberton; the stone pulpit the gift of the Misses Childe Pemberton, and the choir stalls the gift of Henry the late Bishop of Worcester, and Mrs. Philpott, his wife. The whole work of restoration was carried out under the direction of the vicar, the Rev. J. J. Case, from plans by Mr. Oldrid Scott. The register dates from the year 1657. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £258, gross yearly value £327, including 45 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Captain Charles Baldwin Childe J. P. and held since 1890 by the Rev. Joshua John Case, of Queen’s College, Birmingham. The church feast is on Mid-summer-day. Kinlet Hall, a noble mansion, with fine pleasure grounds, and standing in a well-timbered park of about 500 acres, is the seat of Captain Charles Baldwin Childe J. P. who is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is various; the subsoil chiefly freestone. The chief crops are oats, barley, roots and wheat, peas and beans. The area is 8,142 acres of land and 22 of water; rateable value £5,034; the population in 1891 was 558 in the civil and 433 in the ecclesiastical parish.
There was formed October 1, 1889, for the parish of Kinlet and the Button Oak portion of the parish of Dowles a school board of five members; S. Hemingway, Bewdley, clerk to the board National School (mixed), built in 1843 & enlarged in 1891, for 100 children; average attendance 60: & supported in part by Capt. C. B. Childe.
