Historical Description

LEIGHTON is a village and parish, including the townships of Leighton, Garmston and for ecclesiastical purposes, Belleurdine, or Belswardyne, in the Mid division of the county, Wellington division of South Bradford hundred, Atcham union, Shrewsbury county court district, petty sessional division of Wellington, Wrockwardine rural deanery, Salop archdeaconry and Lichfield diocese: Leighton is on the Shrewsbury and Worcester road, near the river Severn and adjoining the Wrekin hill, 6 mile south-west from Wellington, 9 south-east from Shrewsbury, 6 north from Much Wenlock and 2 north-east from Cressage station on the Severn Valley branch of the Great Western railway. The church of St. Mary is a plain building of brick, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western turret of wood containing 3 bells: within the communion rails on the north side is a slab inscribed to Sir William de Leighton and Margaret his wife, 1520: on the south side is a recumbent figure of stone, brought from Buildwas Abbey and representing Sir Richard de Leighton, c. 1385: in the nave is a cast iron slab to William Brown, 1696: the church was restored about 1845. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1662; marriages, 1754. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £210, including 64 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Ralph Wingfield esq. and held since 1863 by the Rev. William Wingfield M. A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. There are charities of £14 8s. 2d. of which £8 8s. 2d. is distributed annually, and about £6 every fourth year. There is an old encampment called the “Beacon Ring,” on the Long Mountain, and several barrows are scattered about the parish. Leighton Hall, the residence of Thomas Frederick Kynnersley esq. D. L., J. P. is picturesquely seated on the north bank of the Severn, overlooking the valley and the pretty church of Shineton. Leighton House is the residence of Thomas Kynnersley esq. J. P. who is lord of the manor, and he and his son, Thomas Frederick Kynnersley esq. D. L., J. P. are sole landowners. The soil is principally adapted for barley and turnip growing, and by the Severn the meadows are rich pasture land used for grazing purposes. The chief crops are cereals. The area is 1,681 acres of land and 31 of water; rateable value, £2,178; the population in 1891 was 268 in the civil and 302 in the ecclesiastical parish.
