Historical Description

LYDHAM is a parish on the road from Bishop’s Castle to Shrewsbury, about 2 miles north-east from Bishop’s Castle and about 148 from London, in the Southern division of the county, Bishop’s Castle division of Purslow hundred, Clun union, Bishop’s Castle county court district, petty sessional division of Clun and Purslow, rural deanery of Clun, archdeaconry of Ludlow and diocese of Hereford.

At Lydham Heath is a station on the Bishop’s Castle railway. Under Local Government Board Order, dated March, 1894, a detached part of Snead was added to this parish. The church of the Holy Trinity is an ancient building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a small western belfry containing two bells: the church was restored in 1885, and further restored in 1891-2 and new choir stalls added. The register dates from the year 1596. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £278; net yearly value £260, including 30 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of John Oakeley esq. and held since 1893 by the Rev. Edward Colls Gathercole M. A. of St. Edmund Hall, Oxford, who resides at Bishop's Castle. Oakeley House, a handsome modern building, is the seat of John Oakeley esq. J. P. the lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is a rich loam; the subsoil varies from clay to sand and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The population of the township in 1891 was 110; the area is 1,910 acres of land and 17 of water; rateable value of the parish, £2,248.
