Historical Description

MINSTERLEY is a township, parish and village, on the road from Shrewsbury via Pontesbury to Montgomery, and bounded on the north by the river Rea, 10 miles south-west from Shrewsbury, 11 north-east from Montgomery, 13 north from Bishop’s Castle and 162 from London, in the Western division of the county, Ford division of Ford hundred, Atcham union, Shrewsbury county court district, petty sessional division of Pontesbury, rural deanery of Pontesbury, archdeaconry of Ludlow and diocese of Hereford. The Shrewsbury and Minsterley branch of the London and North Western and Great Western joint railway has its terminal station here. The church of the Holy Trinity, strictly speaking a parochial chapel of ease, with the rites of christening, marriages and burial, is an edifice of brick, erected about 1690, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and a western turret of wood containing a clock and 2 bells: there are some fine specimens of carved oak: the church plate, which is very massive and costly, bears date 1691: an organ was purchased by voluntary subscriptions in 1884: the interior, considerably altered in 1865 and reseated in 1870, affords sittings for 200 persons. The present register dates only from the year 1847, previous to which registrations were made at Westbury. The living is a perpetual curacy, tithe rent-charge £60, net yearly value £87, with residence, in the gift of the Marquess of Bath, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Reginald William Williams, of King’s, College, London and Cumbraes, and Ph. D. Heidelberg University. There is a Congregational chapel, and a Primitive Methodist chapel with minister’s residence, and graveyard, and at Snail-beach there are Baptist and Primitive Methodist chapels, the latter having a graveyard attached. Minsterley Hall, renovated in 1872, incorporates the remains of the fine old timbered manor house, held in 1691 by the Ladies Thynne. The lead mine, partly in this township and partly in Westbury, is about 500 yards from the top of the shaft: it was formerly one of the most productive in the kingdom, and now yields about 1,000 tons yearly: the lead from this mine is of fine quality, and is especially adapted to the manufacture of flint glass; the mine also produces quantities of blende ores, carbonates and sulphates, baryta, and other minerals, principally carbonate of lime, quartz &c.: that portion of the mine known as “Snailbeach” belongs to the Marquess of Bath, and that called “Vessons” to the Earl of Tankerville: the smelting operations of the company, removed from Pontesford to Snailbeach in 1863, are now discontinued, but new mills have been erected (1893) for the grinding of barytes. At Snailbeach is a mission church, erected in 1872: it is of brick and stone, and consists of chancel and nave and a turret containing one bell: divine service is held twice every Sunday. In the year 1851 a Roman pig of lead, 20 inches long and of the same thickness and weighing 173 pounds, was found by some workmen while engaged in sinking through a slag heap of smeltings, on which appears the following inscription in raised letters:

IMP. HADRIANI AVG.

A stock fair is held here on the second Monday in each month; and an annual fair for cattle on the second Monday in September. The Marquess of Bath is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is strong loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area is 2,637 acres; rateable value, £4,658; the population in 1891 was 798.

National School (mixed), built in 1843 & enlarged in 1874, with residence for a master, for 160 children; average attendance, 130; endowed with £1,059 by the late Joshua Williams, of Worthing, Sussex: the Marquess of Bath & the Snailbeach Mining Company are annual subscribers.
