Historical Description
MORE is a parish, with the townships of More, Moreswood and Linley, in the Southern division of the county, Bishop’s Castle division of Purslow hundred, Clun union, Bishop’s Castle county court district, petty sessional division of Clun and Purslow, Clun rural deanery, Ludlow archdeaconry and Hereford diocese. More is 1 ½ miles north from Lydham Heath station on the, Bishop’s Castle railway, and about 3 north-east from Bishop’s Castle, on the road from Bishop’s Castle to Shrewsbury, which was chiefly made by the late Robert Bridgman More, uncle of the present owner of the parish. The river Onny flows through the parish. The church of St. Peter is an edifice of stone, rebuilt in 1845 toy the late Rev. T. F. More, in the Early English style, and consists of chancel, nave, south transept and a western tower containing 3 bells. The south transept is the private chapel of the More family, several members of which are buried in a crypt. The register dates from the year 1687. The list of the rectors of the parish dates back to the year 1280. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £186, net yearly value £185, including 15 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Robert Jasper More esq. and held since 1888 by the Rev. Edgar William Cockell M. A. of St. Catherine’s College, Cambridge. The charities are of about £7 10s. yearly value, derived from investments in land in Clun parish and government securities. There are various ancient camps on the high lands and the remains of an extensive Roman villa. Linley Hall, a fine building of stone in the Classic style, is the property of Robert Jasper More esq. M. P., M. A., D. L., J. P. who is lord of the manor and sole landowner; the family originally lived at the Castle of More, the site of which still remains, and held their estates by the tenure of grand sergeant, the condition being that the owner of Linley should supply a body guard of 200 men to accompany the king when he went into Wales; the Hall is approached by a double avenue of oaks ½ of a mile long, is at present occupied by Walter Edward Barratt esq. The soil is various. The deposits of lead, which are prolific in the parish of Shelve, are continued at the north-west side of the Stipestones range, which runs into this parish. The area of the parish is 3,481 acres; rateable value, £2,678; the population in 1891 was 178.
School, Linley (mixed), built in 1874, for 50 children; average attendance, 27; it forms a joint school for More & Lydham.
