Prees Marriage Banns (1758-1843)

Historical Description

PREES is a village and parish on the road from Whitchurch to Shrewsbury and has a station on the Shrewsbury and Crewe branch of the London and North Western railway, 183 miles by rail and 163 miles by road from London, 5 south from Whitchurch, 14 ½ north from Shrewsbury and 5 north-east from Wem, in the Northern division of the county, Whitchurch division of North Bradford hundred, Wem union and county court district, petty sessional division of Whitchurch, rural deanery of Whitchurch, archdeaconry of Salop and diocese of Lichfield. The church of St. Chad is a building of stone of the 14th century, partly rebuilt in the 17th century, and consisting of chancel, nave of six bays, north aisle, north porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells, recast in 1728: the tower was rebuilt in 1758: in the chancel is a monument to Sir John Hill bart. 1824: in 1864 the chancel was rebuilt, the roof repaired and the interior re-seated, and in 1884 the church was further repaired and refitted, and stained windows inserted. The register dates from the year 1598. The living is a vicarage, tithe rent-charge £484, gross yearly value about £560, net £450, including 44 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Lichfield, and held since 1883 by the Rev. Edward Addenbrooke B. A. of Trinity College, Oxford. James Fleetwood, afterwards Bishop of Worcester, 1675-83, was vicar here in 1638; he was succeeded by Aylmer Haughton, vicar during the Commonwealth; Christopher Comyn was appointed vicar in 1661. The rectorial tithes are commuted at £812 13s. 1d.; the Ecclesiastical Commission's are the impropriators. There are Congregational and Primitive Methodist chapels. The yearly amount of the charities is about £49 5s. 5d. arising from lands and money in the funds, and are in the hands of the Charity Commissioners. The fair once held is obsolete. General Viscount Hill G. C. B. commander-in-chief 1828-42, was born at Prees Hall 11 Aug. 1772 and died 10 Dec. 1842; the Hall is now the property and residence of Vere Francis John Somerset esq. Viscount Hill D. L., J. P. is lord of the manor of the entire parish and chief landowner. Prees is situated on an outlying mass of the Lias, composed of bluish clays and shales, with some thin beds of limestone: common liassic fossils, chiefly such shells as Gryphea incurva, Ammonites, Belemnites, Pectens, Terebratulae &c. are of common occurrence. Beneath the lime is the new red marl and sandstone which form all the surrounding country. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The population in 1891 was 2,841 in the civil, and 952 in the ecclesiastical parish; the area of the parish is 13,680 acres of land and 63 of water; rateable value, £22,173.

Fauls, with Darleston, Mickley and Sandford, have been formed into an ecclesiastical parish.

National School, Prees, built in 1835-40 & enlarged in 1873, for 180 children; average attendance, 120.
