Historical Description

SMETHCOTT is a parish and village, 2 miles west from the Leebotwood station on the Shrewsbury and Hereford section of the London and North Western and Great Western joint railway, 5 north from Church Stretton, 9 south-west-by-south from Shrewsbury, in the Western division of the county, Condover division of the hundred of Condover, petty sessional division of Condover, union of Church Stretton, Shrewsbury county court district, rural deanery of Condover, archdeaconry of Salop and diocese of Lichfield. The church of St. Michael is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a small open belfry containing 2 bells: there are sittings for 164 persons. The register dates from the year 1612. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £229, net £240, including 41 acres of glebe, in the gift of the trustees of Hulme's charity, and held since 1870 by the Rev. George Mouat Keith Eller ton M. A. of Brasenose College, Oxford. Richard Llewellin Purcell-Llewellin esq. M. A. of Underhill Hall, Churton, who is lord of the manor, the Rev. Francis Henry Wolryche-Whitmore M. A. of Dudmaston Hall, and the Rev. St. Leger F. Hope Edwardes, of Netley Hall, Stapleton, are the principal landowners. The soil is clay, sand and loam; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 2,705 acres; rateable value, £2,484; and the population in 1891 was 267.

National School, built, with residence for mistress, in 1867, for 56 children; average attendance, 42; & supported in part by a half-yearly interest of £210, left by the Rev. Henry Fletcher.
