Historical Description
SUTTON MADDOCK is a village and parish half a miles east from the river Severn, on the Shifnal and Bridgnorth road, 1 ½ miles south-east from Coalport stations on the London and North Western and Great Western railways, 4 south from Shifnal, 6 north from Bridgnorth and 3 south from Madeley, in the Northern division of the county, Shifnal division of Brimstree hundred; Shifnal union and petty sessional division, Madeley county court district, rural deanery of Shifnal, archdeaconry of Salop and diocese of Lichfield. The church of St. Mary is an edifice of red stone, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells: the body of the church was entirely rebuilt in 1888, at a cost of £2,528: two stained windows were presented in the same year by the Broughall family, in memory of their parents. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a vicarage, annexed to the rectory of Kemberton, average tithe rent-charge £403, joint net yearly value £300, with 60 acres of glebe and residence in the gift of the Rev. Thomas Beville Paynter B. A. rector of How-Caple, Ross, and held since 1893 by the Rev. William George Richard Blaby. Major John Townshend Brooke B. A., J. P. of Haughton Hall, Shifnal, who is lord of the manor of Sutton Maddock township, and William Orme Foster esq. D. L., J. P. of Apley Park, Stockton, are the principal landowners of the parish. The soil is a mixture of clay, loam and gravel; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and turnips. The area is 2,724 acres of land and 15 of water; rateable value, £3, 80s.; the population in 1891 was 395.
