Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
The village of Whittington, where are the remains of a castle, anciently belonging to the Fitzwarrens. It had once a market, but it is now lost.
A little to the south of Whittington is the village of Halston, where was a preceptory of Knights Templars, and afterwards of the Knights Hospitallers, which was granted by Queen Elizabeth to William Horne.
WHITTINGTON is a parish, on the road from Oswestry to Ellesmere, 2 ½ miles east-by-north from the former town, 17 north from Shrewsbury and 5 ½ west from Ellesmere, in the Western division of the county, upper division of the hundred of Oswestry, Oswestry incorporation, county court district and petty sessional division, rural deanery of Oswestry, archdeaconry of Montgomery and diocese of St. Asaph. The river Perry and the Shropshire Union canal pass through the parish. There is a station here on the line of the Great Western railway from Shrewsbury to Chester; and one on the Cambrian. Railway, close to the village. The church of St. John the Baptist, erected in 1747, and rebuilt in 1804 at a cost of £1,500, is a plain structure of brick, consisting of chancel with north aisle, nave, vestry and a western tower containing 3 bells; the chancel was in great part rebuilt and a north chancel aisle added in 1861; the church was further restored in 1884, when the vestry was added and a new organ introduced, and again in 1894, when the greater part of the fabric was renovated at a cost of £2,000; the stained east window is a memorial to Constance Charlotte Crofon, d. 1860; and there are other memorial windows to Joseph Venables Lovett, d. 1866, and Margaret, his wife, d. 1851; and to Thomas Lovett, d. 1863; there is also a marble tablet to Chas. Arthur Albany Lloyd, rector of this parish, 1809-51. The register dates from the year 1591. The living is a rectory, tithe rent-charge £960, average £715, net yearly value £375, including 42 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Colonel R. T. Lloyd, of Aston Hall, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Hugh Holbech M. A. of Christ Church, Oxford. There are two Congregational chapels in the parish, and Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan chapels. The Whittington charities amount to about £77 yearly, derived from bequests; John Truston in 1659 gave land producing about £15 yearly, to be distributed in bread every Sunday; Elizabeth Probert in 1675 gave land to the use of the poor of the parish, the present yearly rent of which is £13 10s.; Robert Jones in 1679 gave land for the maintenance of a schoolmaster, of which the present rent is about £20 yearly; Griffith Ap Hugh in 1706 gave land for the teaching of poor children, the present value being £18 a year; John Ap Price gave 40s. yearly to the poor; Elizabeth Lloyd in 1696 gave an annuity of £14, to be distributed to 12 poor families; Sir Nathaniel Lloyd in 1704 left certain dividends, which, as now settled by the Court of Chancery, provide annuities £5 5s. each to 12 persons in Oswestry and 8 in Whittington; Francis Howell in 1842 left £200, the interest to be divided amongst 12 poor widows; there are other small bequests. A Society, known as the “Ladies’ Club,” was established here in the year 1811, with the object of raising funds for the mutual relief of its members in sickness, confinement and at death, and also for providing annual pensions after a certain age; the club, which has long enjoyed a local celebrity, holds an annual fete in July. Fernhill Hall is the seat of Captain John Henniker Lovett D. L., J. P.; and Park Hall, 1 mile west from the village, of Alfred Wynne Corrie esq. J. P.; the latter is an exceedingly handsome and ancient timbered mansion, with projecting gables, built towards the end of the reign of Queen Elizabeth; it is about half-way between Oswestry and Whittington, and is approached by a fine avenue; the entrance hall, which is wainscoted and ornamented with carved oak, has in the centre a massive oak table, dated 1581, the top of which, cut from one plank, measures 20 feet in length, 4 feet in width and 2 ¼ inches in thickness; several of the apartments contain antique oak furniture, elaborately carved, and decorated ceilings; on the west side of the hall is the chapel. Henlle Hall, 1 ½ miles south-east from Gobowen station, the seat of Major Hubert Richard Lovett J. P. is a plain modern mansion in the style of George II. delightfully seated in a well-timbered park of about 150 acres. The chief attraction here is the ancient and now ruined castle, supposed to have been first built in the year 843 by a British chieftain, whose descendants possessed it till the Conquest, when it was given to Peverel, the founder of the family of Peverels of the Peak, by whom it was rebuilt; in the reign of Henry II. it was restored to the family of Peverel, in the person of Sir William Peverel, whose daughter Malet brought it as her dower to her husband, Gwarine de Meer, and their son, Sir Fulk Fitz-Gwarine, and his descendants of the same name held this castle for eight generations; the castle afterwards (by an exchange) became the property of Henry VIII. by whom it was presented to Henry Grey, Duke of Suffolk, who lost it by forfeiture; afterwards Queen Mary granted the castle to Henry Fitz-Alan, last Earl of Arundel K. G.; this nobleman mortgaged it to a number of London citizens, who obtained the place in default of payment by him; William Albany, chief amongst the number, was, by the joint consent and approbation of the rest, put in sole possession of it, and by the marriage of his great grand daughter with Thomas Lloyd esq. of Aston, Whittington castle passed into the hands of that family, and is now the property of Colonel R. T. Lloyd D. L., J. P. of Aston. The castle, before its demolition, was strongly fortified with five round towers, each 49 feet in diameter and 100 feet in height, the walls were 12 feet in thickness; about the year 1760 the eastern tower fell into the moat, and some years afterwards one of the northern towers and the western wall were taken down to repair the road leading from Whittington to Halston bridge; in 1809 a smaller tower was likewise taken down to repair the exterior gateway; the towers of the gatehouse are still entire, and some portions of the ancient building have been modernised and used as a parochial reading room; the ancient fosses and entrenchments may yet be very visibly traced to a considerable distance westward of the castle. In the township of Daywell, in this parish, is Watt’s Dyke, which extends from Pryshenlle into the parish of St. Martin. The distance between this and Offa’s Dyke (which crosses the hills above Selattyn) is about 4 miles; these dykes run north and south, and the intervening space was once thought to have been a common mart, where the English and Welsh met to carry on commercial transactions; either party if passing these bounds being, it was said, exposed to the severities of war; this theory, however, seems hardly consistent with the fact that both these lines of fortification face westward, so that it would seem that they were both intended as defences against the Welsh. Colonel Richard Thomas Lloyd D. L., J. P. of Aston Hall, who is lord of the manor, Charles Henry Wright esq. J. P. of Halston, Major Hubert Richard Lovett J. P. of Henlle Hall, Capt. John Henniker Lovett D. L., J. P. of Fernhill, Oswestry, Alfred Wynne Corrie esq. J. P. Park Hall, and Lord Harlech are the principal landowners. The soil is varied, and the subsoil principally gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area of the parish, comprising the townships of Whittington, Berghill, Daywell, Ebnal, Fernhill, Frankton, Henlle and Hindford, is 8,335 acres of land and 43 of water; rateable value, £21,217; the population of the civil parish in 1891 was 2,103, and of the ecclesiastical 1,571.
Whittington, the central township, in which the village lies, contains 3,631 acres. The ancient name of Whittington was Tre-Wen, the Welsh for White Town; it is called “Wititone” in Domesday Book; in a Norman MS. in the British Museum, of the 13th or 14th century, it is “Blanche Ville.” In the hamlet of Babbin’s Wood, half a mile south-east, which belongs to Whittington township,, are chapels for Wesleyan and Primitive Methodists.
Frankton township has been formed into an ecclesiastical parish.
National School (mixed), erected, with master’s residence, in 1853, at a cost of £950, for 200 children; average attendance, 150; it has an endowment of £48 yearly.
