Historical Description

In the parish of Abbot’s Leigh, about four miles west of Bristol, is a fine large old mansion, memorable for affording an asylum to King Charles II. after his escape from the battle of Worcester, in the year 1651.

ABBOT’S LEIGH is a, small parish and village, on the river Avon, 4 miles west from Bristol, in the Northern division of the county of Somerset, Portbury hundred, Long Ashton union and petty sessional division, Bristol county court district, and in the rural deanery and archdeaconry of Bristol and diocese of Gloucester, The church of the Holy Trinity, with the exception of the tower and chancel, was destroyed by fire in 1848; but the monument to the late J. P. Miles esq. as well as the memorials to the Norton family were preserved, and the church was rebuilt in the same year at the expense of the late Sir William Miles bart. and is now an edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of six bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 very fine bells: the church plate was given by Lady Norton in the reign of Charles the Second: there are sittings for 250 persons. The register dates from 1651. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £175, including 7 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Bristol, and held since 1888 by the Rev. Walter Frederick Brownlow Brinkley M.A. of Pembroke College, Cambridge. Here is a parish hall and reading room. Norton’s charity, left in 1659, amounts to £11 yearly for apprenticing and £13 6s. 4d. yearly for distribution; Miles’s charity, founded by will in 1842, consists of £20 yearly for bread and beef; Roach’s charity amounts to £1 annually; and Addis’a charity to £4 10s. annually Leigh Court, now (1901) unoccupied, is a noble mansion, erected by the grandfather of the present baronet; it has an elegantly designed exterior. Sir Henry Robert William Miles bart. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is sandy; subsoil, limestone, which is quarried in two places. The chief crops are roots, wheat and barley, though a large part of the parish is in pasture and woods. The area is 2,274 acres of land, 2 of water, 25 of tidal water and 46 of foreshore; rateable value, £4,966; the population in 1901 was 327.
