Historical Description

ALLER is a parish and village, on the high road from Bridgwater to Langport, and intersected by the river Parret, 2 ½ miles north-west from Langport station on the Durston and Yeovil branch of the Great Western railway and 5 west from Somerton, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Somerton, petty sessional division of Somerton and Langport, Langport union and county court district, rural deanery of Ilchester, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Andrew is an ancient building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, north aisle, north and south porches and an embattled western tower, with a single pinnacle and containing 3 bells: there is an ancient font: it is believed that Guthrum, a Danish chieftain, who became king of East Anglia, and subsequently with other chiefs attacked King Alfred in Wessex, was baptised here by the name of “AEthelstan,” in A.D. 878 with 30 of his followers, by AEthelred, Archbishop of Canterbury, King Alfred standing sponsor: the church was restored in 1861, and has 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1561. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £450, including 64 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and held since 1858 by the Rev. John Young Nicholson B.D. and formerly fellow of that college, prebendary of Wells.

Here is a Congregational chapel, built in 1888, and seating 150 persons. There is a charity of £7 2s. 4d. yearly value. The chief landowners are the trustees of the late James Kelway esq. Cuthbert Rodham Morris esq. of North Curry, the trustees of William Wood esq. Mrs. Luttrell, of Badgworth Court, the trustees of the Rev. William Pyne M.A. rector of Sock 1852—81, Vincent Stuckey esq. of Hill House, Langport, and Messrs. F. C. and W. Gent. The soil is clayey; the subsoil is blue lias stone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and beans. The area is 3,594 acres of land, 11 of water, 2 of tidal water and 3 of foreshore; rateable value, £6,953; the population in 1901 was 383.

National School (mixed), erected, with house for mistress, in 1872, for 90 children; average attendance, 57.
