Historical Description

ASHBRITTLE is a village and parish, on the river Tone and on the high Road from Wellington to Bampton; it is bounded on the south and west by the county of Devon, and is 3 miles south-east from Venn Cross station on the Devon and Somerset branch and 4 north-west from Burlescombe station on the Bristol and Exeter section of the main line of the Great Western railway, 7 south from Wiveliscombe and 7 ivest from Wellington, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Milverton, Wellington petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Wellington, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. John the Baptist is a building of stone in the Early Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 6 bells: the lower and chancel were rebuilt and the nave restored in 1874, when a clock was placed in the tower at the cost of the present rector: the east and several other windows are stained: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from 1563. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £420, including 76 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late John Quicke esq. of Newton St. Cyres, Devonshire, and held since 1859 by the Rev. Charles Penrose Quicke B.A. of Trinity College, Oxford. St. Peter’s chapel of ease, near Tremlett House, Greenham, built in 1860, on land given by Thomas Edward Clarke esq. formerly of Tremlett, is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave and a western turret containing one bell: there are 100 sittings. The trustees of the late Charles Rowcliffe, who are lords of the manor, Sir Edward William Watkin bart. of Northenden, Cheshire, Mrs. Quicke, Hugh Leonard Acland-Troyte esq. of Huntsham Court, Devon, and John Brown esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is very varied, and the subsoil chiefly slate. The crops are mostly wheat, barley and oats. The area is 2,043a. 2r. 16p.; rateable value, £1,971; the population in 1901 was 233.

A School Board of 5 members was formed September 30, 1874, for the united district of Ashlbrittle & Stawley.

The children of this place attend the Board school at Appley, in the parish of Stawley.
