Historical Description

ASHCOTT (formerly Asheholt) is a village and parish, on the road from Glastonbury to Bridgwater, with a station 2 miles north (called Ashcott and Meare), on the Somerset and Dorset railway, 3 miles south-west from Glastonbury and 9 east from Bridgwater, in the Bridgwater division of the county, hundred of Whitley, petty sessional division, county court district and union of Bridgwater, rural deanery of Glastonbury, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of All Saints is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells: in 1900. an organ was provided: the church was restored in 1831 and again renovated in 1890 at a cost of £1,300: there are 300 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials dates from 1678; marriages, 1679. The living is a chapelry, annexed to the vicarage of Shapwick, joint net yearly value £255, including 90 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Sir James Gordon Henry Graham-Montgomery bart. of 45 Grosvenor place, London S.W. and held since 1894 by the Rev. Colin Francis Montgomery B.A. of Pembroke College, Cambridge, who resides at Shapwick. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel and there is a Wesleyan chapel at Higher Pedwell. The charities are of £75 annual value, two-thirds of which is given to the poor and one-third retained for the repairs of the church. A stock fair is held annually on the 9th of January. Ashcott Hill is the residence of Robert Moss King esq. J.P., D.L. The Hon. H. Bull Templer Strangways, of Shapwick, formerly Premier of South Australia, 1868—70, is lord of the manor, chief landowner and lay rector. The soil is clayey, and the subsoil stone. The chief crops are wheat, beans, oats and barley. Area, 2,272 acres; assessable value, £2,154; the population in 1881 was 718, in 1891, 656, and in 1901, 597.

A School Board of 5 members was formed Jan. 26, 1891; P. O. H. & T. Reed, Bridgwater.

Board School (mixed), established in 1852, for 87 children, since enlarged for 110; average attendance, 85.
