Historical Description

ASHWICK is a parish, 2 miles south-east from Binegar station on the Somerset and Dorset railway, 4 north from Shepton Mallet and 6 north-east from Wells, in the Frome division of the county, hundred of Kilmersdon, petty sessional division and union of Shepton Mallet, county court district of Wells, rural deanery of Midsomer Norton, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. James, rebuilt with the exception of the tower, in 1825, and repaired and improved in 1876, at a cost of about £3,500, by the Misses Gane and Davis, of Oakhill, is an edifice of Mendip lias, in the Early English style, from designs by Messrs. Browne and Gill, architects, of Bath, consisting of chancel, nave of six bays, aisles, vestry, south porch and embattled western tower containing 6 bells: the old tower, of Late Perpendicular work, in three storeys, with angle buttresses, embattled parapet, pinnacles and turret, has been very carefully restored and the tower arch opened into the church; the former peal of 5 bells has been rehung, one being recast and a sixth or tenor bell added: the east window is a memorial to the late Rev. John Davis and his wife: the organ was the gift of Miss Benfield, of Oakhill, who also gave the stained west window as a memorial to the late H. P. Jillard esq.; there are three other memorial windows, presented by Miss Davis, of Oakhill, and Miss Benfield: the pulpit, of pitch pine, oak and mahogany, was the gift of Mrs. Gane: there are about 234 sittings. During the year 1882 the churchyard was enlarged on the north side. The register dates from the year 1701. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value under £110, in the gift of the vicar of Kilmersdon, and held since 1874 by the Rev. John Burton D’Aguilar B.A. of St. John's College, Cambridge; the impropriator is Lord Hylton, of Ammerdown Park, Bath. There is a Wesleyan chapel. Billingsley’s charity of £10 is distributed in money annually, £5 being assigned for the poor of the parish and £5 for educational purposes. On the south-west side of the parish is a Roman camp with a double entrenchment called Maesbury, more fully described under Croscombe. Oakhill House is the residence of Miss Davis.

Ashwick Grove, the property of Richard Charles Strachey esq. J.P. and now occupied by Col. Charles Henry Webster, is a handsome mansion, situated on a declivity on the Bath road, surrounded by fine timber, and well sheltered and protected by a mass of craggy rock; it contains a choice collection of paintings by old masters. Hillylands is the residence of Mrs. John Maitland Spencer. Richard John Bayntun Hippisley esq. of Ston Easton Park, Bath, is lord of the manor, and Richard Charles Strachey esq. J.P. and Frederick Spencer esq. of Poundsmead, Oakhill, are the chief landowners.

Petroleum was discovered in this parish in 1894 on the estate of R. C. Strachey esq. and on examination by experts was declared to be very pure, with the exceptionally high flashing point of 175; its commercial importance has yet to be determined. The soil is light loam; subsoil, limestone. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area is 1,675 acres; rateable value, including Oakhill, £4,997; the population in 1891 was 816 in the civil and 640 in the ecclesiastical parish.

The villages of Nettlebridge and Gurney Slade are partly in this parish.
