Historical Description

Axbridge is an ancient borough and market town, situated in a fine rich champaign country, under the south-west ridge of the Mendip Hills, seventeen miles from Bristol. The river Ax divides the parish from Over Weare, and running under a wooden bridge, supported by stone piers on the foundation of a more ancient fabrick, gives this place its appellation. The town chiefly consists of one principal street, upwards of half a mile in length. There is a good market for corn at this place, and a great number of the poor are employed in knitting hose.

Axbridge was anciently a borough by prescription, and sent members to Parliament as early as the 23rd Edward I., and continued to do so until the reign of Edward III., when it was excused upon the petition of the inhabitants.

The church stands on an eminence on the east side of the market-place, and is a handsome structure, in the form of a cross, consisting of a nave, chancel, north and south transept, north and south side aisles, a chapel on each side of the chancel, and a lofty well-built tower on the west end.

The present members of the corporation, under a charter granted by James I. are a mayor, recorder, town-clerk, ten aldermen, and twenty-two burgesses.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

AXBRIDGE, formerly a borough, and once a market town, is the head of a union, petty sessional division and county court district, with a station on the Cheddar Valley branch of the Great Western railway, and is 20 miles by trail and 16 ½ by road from Bristol, 10 north-west from Wells and 138 from London, in the hundred of Winter stoke, Wells division of the county, rural deanery of Axbridge, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The town is irregularly built, and stands on the line of the old Roman road from Old Sarum to the Bristol Channel, south of, and immediately under, the Mendip hills, and being sheltered from north and north-west winds by those lofty heights the air is peculiarly soft and salubrious; it is lighted with gas supplied by a company and supplied with water from wells. The now extinct borough was one of high antiquity, and charters exist among the archives of the dissolved corporation, renewed by different monarchs from the days of Edward the Confessor down to the reign of Queen Elizabeth, under whose charter the town was till recently governed; but the corporation, which consisted of a mayor, one alderman, recorder, 8 common councillors and 22 burgesses, was abolished in 1886 by the Unreormed Corporations Act, 1883 (46 and 47 Vict. c. 18). Under a scheme of the Charity Commissioners, dated 10th May, 1889, the funds of the town are now administered by a Town Trust, consisting of ten trustees. Axbridge appears to have been a place of some importance in the Roman period, as several Roman roads intersect; here; in later times it was the centre of a royal hunting forest, and afterwards, for a long time, a demesne of the Crown, but the nominal royalty was vested in the corporation. In the years 1295, 1313, 1321—5, the town was represented in Parliament, but on the petition of its inhabitants, representing their inability to bear the expense, it was “excused” in the 17th Edward III. (1343—4) from further representation. The church of St. John the Baptist, standing on an eminence, is a large and handsome cruciform edifice in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel with north and south chapels, nave, transepts, aisles, south porch and a fine tower with angle buttresses, terminating in crocketed pinnacles and a richly pierced parapet: the tower contains 6 bells and a clock with chimes, placed in the tower in 1892 at a cost of £126 10s. raised by subscription; on the west side is a canopied niche, inclosing a crowned figure carrying a sceptre, and probably representing Henry VII. who probably rebuilt the tower; and on the east side is a figure of St. John the Baptist holding the “Agnus Dei”: the windows are fine examples of Perpendicular work: the nave roof is curiously divided by projecting Tibs, with a fleur-de-lis at each intersection, and a tow of immense pendants along the centre, on one of which is the date 1636, at which time considerable repairs were effected: in a pew under the pulpit was found a singular painting of Our Saviour on oak panelling, and conjectured to date from the latter part of the 14th century: there are numerous marble monuments to the Prowse and other families: in the north aisle there is a brass, in good preservation, with kneeling effigies of Roger Harper, merchant of Axbridge, ob. 22 August, and Joan, his wife, ob. 22 July, both in 1493: in 1879, the whole of the exterior and interior stone work of the nave and aisles was restored and the church reseated, at a cost of £3,192, of which Charles Edwards esq. J.P. of The Grove, Wrington, gave £1,000: the chancel was afterwards restored at a cost of £856: in 1884 a further sum of £140 was raised and spent on the restoration of the north transept, at which time a new organ of the value of £245 was placed there: and in 1877 the work was completed at a cost of nearly £1,300, when the stained east window was given by Sidney Hill esq. of Langford: in 1888 a beautiful low metal screen was presented by H. F. Tiarks esq. and four carved oak screens from designs of the late Mr. J. D. Sedding, architect, were erected at a cost of £280: the total cost exceeded £5,500: there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1562. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £143, including 30 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and held since 1883 by the Rev. Henry Toft, chaplain to Axbridge union and surrogate. There is a Wesleyan chapel in High street, with about 250 sittings. The Town Hall, in the Square, is a modern building; here the magistrates for the county hold meetings every fortnight. In the basement are shambles for butchers, but the market is now extinct. The Axbridge and West Mendip Friendly Society holds its meetings here. There are also branches here of the Ancient Order of Foresters and the United Patriots Benefit Society. A very considerable portion of the trade of the town and neighbourhood arises from the culture of strawberries, potatoes and peas, Which are produced in immense quantities under the Mendip range, and the early Axbridge crops are found in London, Bristol, Manchester and Birmingham markets among the first of the year. Iron ore has been found here, but it is not worked. Three fairs are held here, on February 3rd and March 25th and second Tuesday in October, according to the charter; and a monthly market on the second Tuesday in every month for the sale of cattle is well attended. The early closing day is on Wednesday during the summer months. The charities amount to about £128, of which £1 13s. 4d. is for sermons and 13s. 4d. for church purposes; a sum of about £10 is distributed to the poor yearly in bread and about £100 in money. The Court is the residence of Charles Lund Fry Edwards esq. M.A., J.P. The area is 497 acres; rateable value, £2,998; the population in 1891 was 732; and in 1901, 933, including 147 officers and inmates of the workhouse, 17 of whom were casuals. A part of Compton Bishop, including the workhouse and a part of Cheddar, were transferred to the civil parish of Axbridge, August, 1897.
