Historical Description

BACKWELL is a large parish, consisting of five hamlets, viz. Church Town, Farley (or Fairley), West Town, part of Downside and Moorside, in the Northern division of the county, Bedminster union, Bristol county court district, Portbury hundred, Long Ashton petty sessional division, rural deanery of Portishead, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. West Town is on the road from Bristol to Weston-super-Mare, a mile south-east from Nailsea station on the Bristol and Exeter section of the Great Western railway and 7 south-west from Bristol. The church of St. Andrew, at Church Town, is an ancient edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave and aisles, memorial chapel, south porch and a lofty tower with richly ornamented pinnacles, containing a peal of 6 bells: the chancel retains its sedilia of Early English date, and on the north side is a chamber supposed to have been the cell of an anchorite and now used as a vestry: there is a fine 15th century rood screen, and an interesting monument to various generations of the Rodney family, who formerly owned the Court, consisting of a Decorated canopy, c. 1400, beneath which is an altar tomb with the effigy of a knight in armour, c. 1460: there is also a stone screen, with inscriptions and shields of arms, to Sir Walter Rodney and his wife; the latter built the adjoining chapel in memory of her husband, and was buried here in 1537: the east window is a memorial to the Daubeny family, and three others commemorate the families of Bigg, Homer and the brothers Philip and Robert Simmons: the church affords 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1674. The living is a sinecure rectory and vicarage, net yearly value £284, including 108 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Marquess of Bath, and held since 1873 by the Rev. Edward Burbidge M.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and prebendary of Wells, Here is a Wesleyan chapel. The charities are of the annual value of £46 10s. A fair is held on the 21st September. The Marquess of Bath, who is lord of the manor, and Antony Gibbs esq. of Tvntesfield, Wraxall, are the chief landowners. Backwell Hill House, the property and seat of William Garnett esq. is a fine residence standing at an elevation of 528 feet above sea level, and surrounded by 200 acres of well-wooded land, overlooking the Bristol Channel and commanding uninterrupted and extensive views of the surrounding country. The soil on the east side of the parish is sandy, on the west loamy; a great portion of the land is in pasture. The area is 2,882 acres; rateable value, £8,784; the population in 1901 was 936.

A portion of the ecclesiastical parish of St. Katharine, Felton, was taken out of this parish May 6, 1873.
