Historical Description

BADGWORTH is a parish and village on the road from Bristol to Bridgwater, 4 miles south-west from Axbridge station on the Cheddar Valley branch of the Great Western railway, in the Wells division of the county, hundred of Winterstoke, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Axbridge, rural deanery of Burnham, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Congar is a building of stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and a western tower containing 5 bells, the second bearing the inscription " Sancte Rafael, ora pro nobis”; the third bears “Benedictum sit nomen domini”: in 1864 the chancel was rebuilt in the Decorated style, the body of the church repaired, the founder’s tomb and a piscina was rebuilt in the chancel wall, the gallery removed and the western arch thrown open 5 in the course of the work it was discovered that the original stone pulpit, ornamented with curious but much mutilated carved figures, had formed the pedestal of the later pulpit: in 1873 an organ was introduced and slightly enlarged in 1888: there are several mural tablets to former rectors, two stained windows, some fine old oak of 16th century date and an Early English font: there are 170 sittings. A new burial ground was added to the churchyard and consecrated in 1896. The register dates from 1671. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £500, including 86 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late Sir Charles Mordaunt bart. (d. 1897), and held since 1861 by the Rev. Harvey Mallory Mapleton M.A. of St. John’s College, Oxford. The diocesan records contain a list of rectors from 1309. The trustees of the late Sir Charles Mordaunt bart. of Walton Hall, Warwick (d. 1897), who are lords of the manor; Walter Long esq. of The Holt, Bishop’s Waltham, Hants; Mrs. W. Salvidge, of East Brent; Mrs. Say, of Laycock, Wilts, and William Chappel Arney esq. of Rocks Bridge, are the chief landowners. The soil is loam with subsoil of clay. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area is 1,771 acres; rateable value, £4,715 the population in 1901 was 235.

By Local Government Board Order 17,341, March 25, 1885, a house in Pill Row, in this parish, was transferred to East Brent.

National School (mixed), built in 1874, for 60 children; average attendance, 30.
