Historical Description

BALTONSBOROUGH is a village and parish on the river Brue, 4 miles south-west from Glastonbury and 5 south-east from Pennard station on the Somerset and Dorset joint railway, in the Eastern division of the county, eastern division of Glaston Twelve Hides hundred, Glastonbury petty sessional division, Wells union and county court district, rural deanery of Glastonbury, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Dunstan is a building of stone in the Late Pointed style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing a clock and 6 bells, all recast in 1804: the chancel retains its sedilia, which are ornamented with shields inclosed in panels, and there is an aumbry on the north side; the chancel walls have a richly-carved oak cornice, and there is a modern rood screen, the ancient stair turret remaining on the north side: the ceiling of the nave is waggon-shaped and was restored and coloured about 1875: the benches, dating from the 15th century, are of massive character; and the woodwork includes a stool of Jacobean date, said to have been formerly in use for offenders when doing penance: in the south wall of the nave is a piscina, and the church still keeps an hourglass stand: the gables of the building exhibit some good mediaeval crosses, and the tower roof displays fantastic metal work, wrought and affixed by a local smith: there are 200 sittings: in the churchyard is a cross with a modern base and shaft, and an ancient crucifix head.

The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, formerly annexed to that of Butleigh, but erected into a separate benefice in 1895, yearly value £197, in the gift of Robert Neville Grenville esq. and held since 1895 by the Rev. Henry Dawes. There is a Wesleyan chapel, seating 100 persons. The Moravian chapel, erected in 1852, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, and will seat 250 persons; attached is a minister’s house, built in 1859. Orchard Neville is the residence of Mrs. Frederick Neville. The trustees of the late William Benjamin Naish (d. 1885), who are lords of the manor, Mr. James Austin, Mrs. Haine, Mr. William Austin, Mr. Thomas Goodson and Robert Neville Grenville esq. of Butleigh Court, are the chief landowners. Soil and subsoil, blue lias. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area is 2,709 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £6,233; the population in 1901 was 617.
