Historical Description

BANWELL is a large parish and village, having a station called Sandford and Banwell on the Cheddar Valley branch of the Great Western railway, 1 ¼ miles east from the village and is 3 ½ miles north-west from Axbridge, 6 south-east from Weston-super-Mare and 135 from London, in the Wells division of the county, Winterstoke hundred, Axbridge petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Locking, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. Since June, 1864, the village has been lighted with gas by a company formed in 1863. The church of St. Andrew is a spacious and handsome building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, south porch with parvise and a lofty western tower with embattled stepped parapet and pinnacles and containing a clock and 6 bells: the stained east window is a memorial to the Right Rev. George Henry Law D.D. bishop of Bath and Wells 1824—45: in 1888 a stained window was erected by the parishioners and friends to commemorate the fiftieth year of the vicariate of the Rev. W. H. Turner M.A. vicar from 1838 to 1896; there are other stained windows to the Lady Charlotte (Grey), wife of the Rev. Chancellor Law, d. Feb. 25, 1866, and to Lieut. Charles H. Blachly Turner, 67th Regiment, who died at Tien-tsin, Nov. 17, 1860: in the vestry is some Flemish glass, illustrative of incidents from the Book of Tobit: a very elaborately carved and richly gilt oak screen of the 15th century divides the chancel and nave; it appears to have been erected about 1522, and in the churchwardens’ accounts are various entries relative to its construction and decoration: the chancel retains an almery and piscina: the nave has a fine cradle roof, and there is a good stone pulpit and a font of Perpendicular date: in the nave is the brass of a civilian and his wife, c. 1480: in the chancel is another brass, with effigy in the dress of an ecclesiastic, to John Martok, physician, ob. May 31, 1503; in the nave is another brass with mutilated effigies, to John Blandon, ob. 1554, and Elizabeth, his wife, and on the same slab is an inscription to Thomas Morse, ob. 1608: near the chancel door is a memorial to William Beard, a local self-taught zoologist and long known in connection with the famous bone cavern here; he died Jan. 9, 1868, aged 95: in 1865 the interior of the church was handsomely restored and decorated: there are sittings for 650 persons. The register dates from the year 1569. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £393, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Bristol, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Charles Samuel Taylor M.A. of Merton College, Oxford. There is also a Wesleyan chapel and a Baptist, chapel. A fair is held on the 18th January for cattle. In the centre of the village rises the spring from which the place in part derives its name: it forms a pond, works a corn mill and is also used by the owners (Messrs. Castle, Son and Woods) for working the machinery of their brewery; it yields about 12 tons per minute, and has never been, known to fail. There is a well-appointed volunteer fire brigade station; the engine-house was presented by the late Miss Fazakerly, of The Abbey, and the engine obtained by public subscription; the brigade consists of a captain, an engineer and ten men. This village presents many objects of interest to the visitor and antiquary; historians agree that the Bishop’s palace, mentioned by Leland, in his “Itinerary,” as then standing here, was built on the site of the notable Saxon, monastery, founded by King Alfred, and destroyed by the Danes, and which, though several times restored after the Conquest by Bishops of the see of Rath and Wells (particularly by Bishops Drokensford, A.D. 1309; Beckington, 1443; and Oliver King, 1449), never attained to its original magnificence, and after the Reformation fell into decay. During the last century the ancient hall, built by Bishop Beckington, was converted into a residence, called the Court House, restored about 1870, under the direction of Mr. Hans Price, architect; other parts of the ruins have been pulled down, with the exception of the chapel, which still remains, as well as two or three of the adjoining rooms and part of the hall; the window at the east end is a fine specimen of Early English; in this chapel Bishop Drokensford performed several important ceremonies and executed deeds and mandates still on record: in 1874 several fragments of Norman stonework and other interesting remains were discovered; the abbey is now the property and residence of Edwyn Robert Bevan esq. On the highest part of the hill, amidst thriving plantations, the late Lord Auckland, when bishop of Bath and Wells, erected a tower, overlooking the surrounding country and the Bristol Channel, and visible at a great distance. To the south side of the village on a range of the Mendip hills, contiguous to the Roman road from Uphill to Salisbury, are two Roman encampments. At the extremity of Banwell hill is the residence of Major James Adeane Law J.P. termed “The Oaves,” from its proximity to the famous bone caves here, in one of which an immense quantity of bones were found and arranged, chiefly by the exertions of the late Mr. W. Beard. The most valuable of these relics are preserved in the Taunton museum, but many still remain in the cave. Banwell Castle, the residence of Sydney Royse Lysaght esq. is a commodious building in the Tudor style, and there are several other good residences. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who are lords of the manor, and William Wyndham esq. of Dinton House, Salisbury, Wilts, are the chief landowners. The soil is loam and clay; the subsoil, clay and limestone. The land is chiefly in pasture and orchards. The area is 4,829 acres; rateable Value, £15,390; the population in 1901 was 1,413 in the civil and 1,409 in the ecclesiastical parish.

National School (mixed), for 240 children; average attendance, 158.
