Historical Description

BARROW GURNEY is an agricultural parish and small village, between the roads from Bristol to Weston-super-Mare and Bristol to Exeter, miles south from Flax Bourton station on the main line of the Great Western railway and 5 south-west from Bristol, in the Northern division of the county, Hartcliffe hundred, Long Ashton petty sessional division and union, county court district of Bristol, rural deanery of Portishead, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The village is charmingly situated in a hollow between sloping hills covered with orchards and rich pasture land, and is traversed by a streamlet, utilised to work two mills. The church of St. Mary the Virgin and St. Edward, King and Martyr, which appears to have shared the dedication of the priory, stands on high ground, close to Barrow Court, and over a mile distant from the village, originally consisted of a chancel, nave, south aisle (probably the nuns’ choir) and a western tower of Early English date. About 1820 the chancel was pulled down, and the rest of the fabric, with the exception of the tower, rebuilt in a very poor style, the nave and aisle being divided by three Perpendicular arches: in 1889 the church was entirely restored, mainly through the generosity of H. M. Gibbs esq. at a cost of £10,134, when the tower was rebuilt and a chancel, vestry and organ chamber added: the new tower contains 8 bells, 5 new bells having been;added to the previous 3 in 1889: the church contains several stained windows and some good carved work, various monuments to the Gore family, and one of excellent design, dated 1616, to Francis James LL.D.: a piece of 14th century tesselated pavement is supposed to mark the grave of Dame Joan d'Acton: there are 206 sittings. The registers date from the year 1590. The living, anciently a chaplaincy in the appointment of the priory, is now a vicarage, net yearly value £206, with residence, in the gift of H. M. Gibbs esq. and held since 1882 by the Rev. James Alfred William Wadmore M.A. of Oriel College, Oxford. A new parish room was erected in 1901 by H. Martin Gibbs esq. Here, at a height of 310 feet above the sea level, are three reservoirs and filter beds belonging to the Bristol Waterworks Co. The reservoirs, fed from springs in the Mendip hills, hold 750 million gallons, and the water is conveyed to the city by gravitation. The Priory of Benedictine nuns once existing here was founded some time prior to the year 1212, by one of the Gournays, lords of Stoke Hamden, and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Edward, king and martyr, and the Holy Trinity; the total revenue, as taken in 1535, amounted to £29 6s. 8d. and the priory was surrendered 19 Sept. 1536. The names of ten of the prioresses, from 1316 to 1535, with a history of the convent, is contained in vol. xii. Somerset Arch. Assoc. Journal. Barrow Court, the residence of Henry Martin Gibbs esq. J.P. which occupies the site of the priory, is a mansion of three storeys, built in the form of the letter E, and retains some fine stucco ceilings, several richly-carved chimney pieces and a Jacobean porch; only a very small portion of the building is modern. In rear of the house stands an ancient tithe barn of picturesque character, and with a high pitched roof. The manor was anciently held by the Gournay or Gurney family, from which the village receives its distinctive name. The principal landowners are John Gratwicke Blagrave esq. who is also lord of the manor, and the trustees of the late Sir John H. Greville Smyth bart. (d. 1901). The soil is clayey; subsoil, limestone; wheat, barley and roots are grown, but the land is chiefly in pasture. Dial quarry is of carboniferous limestone; lime burning is carried on. The parish contains 1,995 acres of land and 69 of water; rateable value, £14,538; the population in 1901 was 358.

National School (mixed & infants), built in 1863, for 64 children; average attendance, 61.
