Historical Description
BARTON ST. DAVID is a small parish, 7 miles west from Castle Cary station on the Great Western railway, 4 north-east from Somerton and 9 north-east from Langport, in the Eastern division of the county, hundreds of Catsash and Wytstan, Somerton and Langport petty sessional division, Langport union and county court distirct, rural deanery of Carey, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The river Brue skirts the parish and turns a flour mill. The church of St. David, originally cruciform, is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, north porch and an octagonal embattled tower in the angle formed by the north transept and the chancel, and containing 4 bells: the doorway of the north porch is Norman: on the north side of the chancel is a hagioscope, and the doorway leading to the rood loft remains: the chancel also retains a piscina: the church was repaired and re-seated in 1872—4 at a cost of £830, and the restoration was completed in 1894, under the direction of Mr. Edmund Buckle, architect, and the south transept rebuilt on its original foundations: in the nave was formerly a large painting of David the Psalmist, now removed to the vestry: there are sittings for 120 persons: the churchyard, which has been enlarged by the addition of some adjoining land given by Col. W. Pinney, of Somerton Erleigh, contains the remains of a cross, on the west side of which is the effigy of a bishop with maniple and wearing a mitre, and carrying a wallet suspended by a strap over his right shoulder; the figure has been conjectured to represent St. David, archbishop of Menevin in the 6th century. The register of baptisms and burials dates from 1714, and of marriages 1755. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £210, including 38 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Bath and Wells. There is a Congregational chapel, built in 1804, and seating 240 persons. William Dickinson esq. of Kingweston House, John James Bond esq. and Mr. Grimstead Hart are the chief landowners.
