Historical Description

BARWICK is a small parish on the borders of Dorsetshire, 1 mile south from Yeovil Junction station on the South Western railway, in the Southern division of the county, Houndsborough, Barwick and Coker hundred, Yeovil petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Merston, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and WelIs. The church of St. Mary Magdalene is an ancient building of stone in the Early English style, consisting, of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and a tower on the north side containing 2 bells: in the north aisle are two mural tablets to the Newman and Messiter families, and one in the south aisle to the Symes family, dated 1671: the stained east window was presented by Mrs. Harbin: the north aisle has a ceiling of ancient panelled oak: the nave is seated with handsomely carved oak benches, dated 1533: the church was completely restored and the chancel rebuilt in 1885—6, at a total cost of £1,500; during the restoration several architectural features of interest were discovered, including a hagioscope, the stone steps to the rood loft and sculptured heads: there are sittings for 200 persons. The register dates from the year 1560. The living & a rectory, net yearly value £141, including 25 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of Charles Alston Messiter esq. (d. 1894), and held since 1901 by the Rev. William Henry Jenoure L.Th. of Durham University. Stoford is a hamlet, half a mile east. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, seating 100. A large cattle and horse fair is held on the 11th June and 28th September yearly. Barwick House, the property of the trustees of Charles Alston Messiter esq. (d. 1894) and residence of His Honor Judge Frederick Adolphus Philbrick K.C., B.A. is a mansion of Hamhill stone, dating from about the middle of the last century, in French Renaissance style: it is situated in a fine undulating park of nearly 200 acres, ornamented with luxuriant timber, and containing several springs, which supply a lake, near the house, of about 5 acres in extent. Little Barwick is the residence of Mrs. Ffooks. The trustees of Charles Alston Messiter esq. are lords of the manor, and own nearly the whole of the land. The soil and subsoil are sand and clay. The chief crops are barley, oats, and some land in pasture. The area is 761 acres; rateable value, £2,236; the population in 1891 was 454.
