BATCOMBE is a village and parish, between the roads from Bruton to Frome and Shepton Mallet, 3 miles east from Evercreech station on the Somerset and Dorset railway, 3 north from Bruton station on the Great Western railway, 3 south from Cranmore station on the Witham, and Wells branch of the same line, 9 south-west from Frome and 7 south-east from Shepton Mallet, in the Frome division of the county, Whitestone hundred, Shepton Mallet petty sessional division and union, Frome county court district, rural deanery of Bruton, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Mary is a large and ancient building of stone, principally in the Perpendicular style, and consisting of chancel, nave of four bays with clerestory, aisles, south porch, vestry and a massive western tower, with pierced parapet of great beauty, containing a clock and 6 bells, a new tenor bell having been hung in 1887: the later portion of the building, which comprises the south aisle and porch, was erected by James Bisse in 1629; the exterior of the church is much enriched with carving: the nave has a pierced parapet, and on the west face of the tower, within a canopied niche, is a figure of Our Saviour, crowned, with the globe under his feet, and on each side of the niche are angels carrying thuribles, emblems of the Passion, and scrolls: in the chancel is a piscina, and at the east end of the north aisle is a turret: the eastern gable of the nave retains a crucifix, and the gable of the chancel a floriated cross of the Early Decorated period: the font was cleaned or restored in 1844: in the chancel are stained windows to the Rev. Thomas Coney, 50 years rector of the parish, and Elizabeth, his wife, and by the side of the vestry door is a quaint brass to Philip Bisse D.D. rector of this place from 1598 to 1613, and archdeacon of Taunton: a large stone monument in the north aisle records the decease of members of the Bisse family; the earliest of these dates is 1593: in the vestry is an oak register chest, made in 1683: an ancient font, and fragments of arches and pillars found built into an old bridge at Spargrove, were collected by the Right Rev. Bishop Hobhouse D.D. now of Wells, and placed in this church: there are sittings for 400 persons. The register dates from the year 1642. The living is a rectory, with the perpetual curacy of Upton Noble annexed, joint net yearly value £600, including 100 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of The Rock Insurance Company, and held since 1878 by the Rev. Walter Collyns Baker M.A. Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. Richard Bernard, author of a book on Witchcraft and “The Isle of Man, or Legal Proceedings in Manshire against Sin," was sometime rector here and died in 1641. Among the rectors of the parish was also the celebrated Richard Alleine, his suceesor, and one of the 2,000 incumbents ejected from their livings in 1662 for non-compliance with the Act of Uniformity. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, Westcombe is the seat of Mrs. Ernst. The manor of Batcombe belonged for centuries to the monastery of Glastonbury: at the dissolution of religious houses by Henry VIII. the rectorial manor with the advowson of the church was given to James Bisse and his heirs: in 1689 it came into the hands of Humphrey Buckler; in 1728 Rodney Bridges esq. purchased it; it afterwards became the property of the Duke of Chandos, and finally of the Rev. Walter Collyns Baker M.A. (the present rector). Mrs. Ernst and A. C. Murton Neale esq. R. Baily-Neale esq. of Nunney, and the Rev. W. C. Baker M.A. who is lord of the manor, are the chief landowners. The soil is a light loam; the subsoil is chiefly stone. The whole parish is divided into small farms, principally dairy. The acreage is 3,229; rateable value, £6,173; the population in 1901 was 461.
