Historical Description

BATHAMPTON is a parish and village on the Kennet and Avon canal and adjoining Wiltshire, with a station at the junction of the Wilts, Somerset and Weymouth branch with the main line of the Great Western railway, 105 miles from London and 2 north-east from Bath, in the Frome division of the county, hundred of Hampton and Claverton (though locally in the hundred of Bath forum), Weston petty sessional division, Bath union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Nicholas is an ancient building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 5 bells: there are several monuments, including one to Sir Roderick Impey Murchison kt. and bart. F.R.S, the distinguished Scotch geologist, d. Oct. 22, 1871, and others to the Allen family; here also was interred Admiral Phillip, the “Father of Australia,” and first Governor of New South Wales, who died Aug. 31, 1814: there is a brass eagle lectern, and in 1894 a new pulpit was erected by Miss Ramsbottom in memory of her sister: in 1899 a memorial window was placed in the north aisle to Capt. Salter: the church was restored and enlarged in 1858 and a new south aisle and porch added in 1882 at a cost of £1,373: there are sittings for 400 persons. The earliest date of register for Bathampton as separate from Bathford is 1855. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £82, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Bristol, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Lancelot John Fish M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The Hume and Walter charities amount to £3 yearly each. Here is a corn mill, built by the Charmbury family, now used by Mr. William Harbutt for the manufacture of modelling paste. Colite building stone is found among the hills. Hampton Manor is the residence of Charles Price-Davis J.P. Col. Ralph Edward Allen, of 10 Hanover square, London, W. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is loamy; the subsoil, stone. The larger portion of the parish is pasture land. The area is 932 acres of land and 27 of water; rateable value, £8,651; the population in 1901 was 460.

A School Board of 5 members was formed May 10, 1894; W. Kemble, hon. clerk to the board.
