Historical Description

BATHEASTON is a village and parish on the river Avon, and bounded on the east by the county of Wilts, and is half a mile north from Bathampton station on the main line of the Great Western railway, and 2 ½ northeast from Bath, in the Frome division of the county, hundred of Bath Forum, Weston petty sessional division, Bath union and county court district, rural deanery of Keynsham, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. John the Baptist is an ancient building of stone in the Later English style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, south porch, vestry, organ chamber and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells, one of which is of very early date, with the following inscription in Lombardic characters:-“Virginis egregiae vocor campana Mariae:” the chancel was rebuilt in 1860, a south aisle added in 1868 and an organ chamber and vestry in 1875: several of the windows are stained: in 1889 a carved oak screen was erected in the tower and a window in the south aisle as memorials to the Rev. Thomas Percival Rogers M.A. vicar 1851—88: there are sittings for 574 persons. The register dates from the year 1634. The living is a vicarage, with St. Catherine’s chapelry annexed, joint net yearly value £250, with residence and 1 ½ acres of land, in the gift of Christ Church, Oxford, and held since 1888 by the Rev. Arthur Medows Downes M.A. of that House.

At Bailbrook is an iron mission church, built in 1892, and there are Wesleyan and Congregational chapels.

The charities amount to about £20 yearly value. The old Roman Fosseway runs through the parish, and on the top of Salisbury Hill are the remains of a circular entrenchment, supposed to be Saxon. The Bath Water Works have reservoirs here. Bailbrook House, a mansion standing in its own grounds, and the property of Lionel A. Weatherley M.D. is now a private lunatic asylum. The soil is loamy; subsoil, lias. The land is principally devoted to market gardening. The area is 1,880 acres of land and 10 of water; rateable value, £8,919; the population in 1901 was 1,648.
