Historical Description

BATHFORD is a parish and village, nearly 5 miles in length, 1 mile east from Bathampton station on the main line of the Great Western railway, and 3 ½ east-northeast from Bath, in the Frome division of the county, Bath-Forum hundred, Weston petty sessional division, Bath union and county court district, rural deanery of Keynsham, archdeaconry of Bath and diocese of Bath and Wells. The village stands on a hill, and the parish is pleasantly situated on the borders of Wiltshire and on the banks of the river Avon, which is here crossed by a bridge: it was originally called Ford, and was known by that name down to the 17th century, the ford from which it took its name being part of the ancient Roman road, afterwards called “The Fosseway.” The church of St. Swithin is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel with south aisle, nave of three bays, aisles, north porch and an embattled western tower with four pinnacles and containing 6 bells: the north aisle was added in 1856 and the tower entirely rebuilt in 1879 by Henry Duncan Skrine esq. at a cost of £1,600: on the tower is a figure of St. Swithin in the act of benediction: the south aisle has also been enlarged, a new south chancel aisle erected and the church thoroughly restored and re-seated: there are several good stained windows; the west window, erected in 1880 by William Long esq. of West Hay, Wrington, is a memorial to his wife, Elizabeth Hare Long: the font is Norman, and there is a carved stone reredos and a handsomely carved oak pulpit of the time of James I.: in the north porch are the remains of Norman work: the church affords sittings for 415 persons. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1727; marriages and burials, 1729.Stolen from For​e​bears​.co​.uk The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £220, including 52 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Bristol, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Alan Edward Gardner M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Here is a Baptist chapel. The charities amount to £40 yearly. There is a paper mill and quarries of Bath stone. Remains' of a Roman camp and two Roman villas, tumuli and other antiquities have been discovered at different times. Shockerwick House is the residence of Charles Morley esq. M.P., J.P. Warleigh Manor is the residence of Col. Henry Mills Skrine V.D., J.P. and Bathford Manor House, of Capt. Thomas Galling Gilling. the trustees of the late Henry Duncan Skrine esq. of Claverton, lords of the manor; Charles Morley esq. M.P. and Edwin R. Fuller esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy; subsoil, clayey, with beds of oolite. The chief crops are wheat and barley, but the larger portion of the parish is pasture land. The area is 1,799 acres of land and 20 of water; rateable value, £6,417; the population in 1901 was 890.

Warleigh, one mile and a half south, is a hamlet.
