Historical Description

BECKINGTON is a parish and village, on the high road from Frome to Bath, 3 miles north-east from Frome station on the Wilts, Somerset and Weymouth branch of the Great Western railway, and 10 south-east from Bath, in the Frome division of the county, Frome hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Frome, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Gregory is an ancient building of stone in the Transition style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, a side chapel formerly belonging to the Sheppard and Kelson families, but now used as a vestry, organ chamber, north and south porches, and a western tower with pinnacles, and containing a clock and 6 bells: the tower is of Norman date, and the font is a fine example of the same period: on the north side of the chancel, within canopied recesses, are three recumbent effigies; there are also brasses to John St. Maur, ob. 1485, and Elizabeth (Darrell) his wife, ancestors of the Seymours, Dukes of Somerset, and to John Compton, merchant, ob. 1510, and Elizabeth his wife: in the north aisle is an inscribed slab, with bust, to Samuel Danyell, a historical poet, and for some time poet-laureate, who was interred here in Oct. 1619: the church was restored in 1873 and re-seated with open benches, at a cost of £3,500, and now affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559, and contains an entry to the effect that Charles II. passed through here after the battle of Worcester, Sept. 3, 1651. The living is a manorial rectory, with that of Standerwick annexed, joint net yearly value £550, including 72 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1892 by the Rev. Thomas Hugh Langford-Sainsbury M.A. of Trinity College, Oxford, whose family has been for centuries resident in this parish: the Rev. William Sainsbury was rector in 1710. Alexander Huish, one of the editors of Walton’s Polyglot Bible, who died in 1668, was rector of the parish before and after the Commonwealth: and the registers of that time are kept in a singularly minute and beautiful style. Here is a Baptist chapel, erected in 1786, with 350 sittings. There is a reading room, with about 40 members. The charities amount to £35 yearly. This place, formerly celebrated for its manufacture of cloth, was the birthplace, about 1385, of Thomas de Beckington, bishop of Bath and Wells (1443—65), who died at Wells, 14 Jan. 1464—5. Alfred Parsons, elected A.R.A. in 1897, and a landscape painter of distinction, is also a native of this place. Beckington Castle, the residence of Colonel Augustus West Hill, and the Manor House, are mansions of early date. Seymour’s Court, about half a mile east, and now a farm-house, was once the seat of Sir Thomas Seymour, Baron Seymour of Sudeley, who married Queen Catherine Parr, widow of Henry VIII.; he was brother to the Protector Somerset, by whose order he was executed for high treason, 10 Mar. 1548—9. Sir William Roger Brown kt. of Highfield House, Trowbridge, is lord of the manor and owner of Seymour’s Court; the rector is lord of the manor of Beckington, and the Rev. Edward Betenson Edgell B.A. rector of Bromham, Wilts, is lord of the manor and chief landowner of Standerwick. The soil is various; and the subsoil, clay and Ruckley stone. The land is in pasture for dairy purposes. The acreage is 2,025 , rateable value, £4,451; the population in 1901 was 796 in the civil and 868 in the ecclesiastical parish.

National School (mixed & infants), built in 1850, for 160 children; average attendance, 118.
