The parish contains a number of good residences; the old parish extended to the centre of the town of Taunton, including a handsome suburb, the Castle and Castle Green, and the district known by the name of Tangier, but by Local Government Board Order, No. 18,412, which came into operation March 25, 1885, all that part of Bishops Hull parish within the Taunton municipal borough was formed into a separate parish, known as “Bishops Hull Within.” The church of SS. Peter and Paul is a building of stone, in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, and an ancient octagonal tower containing a clock and 6 bells: the stained east window is a memorial, and there is another, placed in 1886, to Samuel Pitman and his wife: the church has some fine carved benches, dating from about 1530; the chancel contains some good monuments to the Farewell family: there are sittings for 300 persons. The parish register dates from the year 1560. The living is a perpetual curacy, gross yearly value £195, including 60 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. Here is a Congregational chapel, founded in 1662, and seating 220 persons. A cemetery for the parishes of Bishops Hull and Taunton St. Mary has been formed in this parish on the Taunton road. There are charities of the annual value of £60. Court or Manor House, the property of Col.
