Historical Description

BISHOPS LYDEAED is a parish, head of a petty sessional division, and considerable village, pleasantly seated on the road from Taunton to Minehead, with a station on the West Somerset branch of the Great Western railway, and is 5 miles north-west from Taunton, 8 north from Wellington, and 151 from London, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Kingsbury West and Taunton Dean, Taunton union and county court district, rural deanery of Wellington, archdeaconry of Taunton, and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Mary is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, transepts, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a musical peal of 8 bells: there are several stained windows, and in the south transept is a brass with effigies and inscription to Nicholas Grobham, ob. August 7, 1585, and Eleanor (Troble), his wife, ob. September 27, 1594: the church was restored and reseated about 1850, the ancient carved oak bench ends and screen being preserved: there are sittings for 450 persons: in the churchyard are two ancient crosses. The register dates from the year 1640. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £289, including 11 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Wells, and held sines 1882 by the Rev. William Fitz-Eustace Eustace M.A. of St. Peter's College, Cambridge. Here is a Congregational chapel, with a Sunday school attached. There are almshouses for ten poor people, founded and endowed by Sir Richard Grobham kt, of Great Wishford, Wilts, in 1616: the funds have since been increased by a donation from Mrs. Mary Hill in 1851; the yearly income is now about £233. The Horticultural Society hold an annual meeting and distribute prizes. The principal seats are Sandhill Park, of 120 acres, the property of Sir Wroth Acland Lethbridge bart. but now (1901) occupied by William Proctor Baker esq. J.P.; Cothelstone House, the residence of Charles Edward Jeffries Esdaile esq. J.P. (described in Cothelstone parish); Lynchfield, of W. H. Worrall esq.; Lydeard House, of George Saunders esq.; and Watts House, of Major Lewis Lovat Ayshford Wise J.P. Sir Wroth A. Lethbridge bart. who is lord of the manor, C. E. J. Esdaile esq. and the Earl of Carnarvon are the principal landowners. The soil is various, one part being a rich loam and the other clay; subsoil, marl, producing excellent crops of wheat, beans, barley, mangold, potatoes and turnips. The area is 4,817 acres of land and 15 of water; assessable value, £9,078; the population in 1891 was 1,105 in the civil and 1,093 in the ecclesiastical parish.

By Local Government Board Order, 16,397, Denby House and Farm were transferred to Ash Priors, March 24, 1884, and at the same date, by the same Order, North and South Lodge were added to Ash Priors from Bishop's Lydeard.

Petty Sessions are held at the Court House, Bishops Lydeard, 2nd Thursday in each month at 11 a.m. The places in the division are Ash Priors, West Bagborough, Bishops Lydeard, Combe Florey, Cothelstone, Halse, Heathfield, Lydeard St. Lawrence & Tolland County of Somerset & City of Bath Lunatic Asylum for Paupers, Copford; established 1897, occupies 10 acres & receives 450; Henry Talbot Sidney Aveline M.R.C.S.
