Historical Description

BLAGDON is a large village and scattered parish, delightfully seated on the northern declivity of the Mendip Hills, 6 miles east from Sandford station on the Axbridge and Wells branch of the Great Western railway, 8 south-east from Yatton, 8 north-east from Axbridge, 6 north-east from Cheddar station (over the hill), 12 south-west from Bristol and 10 north-west from Wells, in the Wells division of the county, Winterstoke hundred, Axbridge petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Locking, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. A stream, tributary to the river Yeo, flows through a rich valley on the outskirts of the parish and continues a short distance west of Burrington, through Wrington. There is a terminal station here of the Wrington Vale light railway, now (1901) in course of construction from Congresbury by the Great Western Railway Co. The church of St. Andrew, rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1822, is a building of dolomitic conglomerate stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and a western tower, supported at the angles by substantial square set buttresses of unusual character, and containing 6 bells: on the south side is a curious square stone, with carving now indistinguishable, and a canopied niche: in the north aisle are two large pews, belonging to the lord of the manor: the stained east window contains the arms of the diocese, of the Rev. Daniel G., Wait, rector from 1881, and of the late Henry Seymour esq. lord of the manor in 1882: the Rev. John Lankhorne D.D. joint translator with his brother William of “Plutarch’s Lives,” was rector of this parish 1767—79, and in the chancel is a monument to his wife (nee Cracroft), who died here in 1768: in 1897 the tower was thoroughly restored by Sir W. H. Wills bart. as a memorial to his wife Elizabeth (Stancomb), who died in 1896: there are sittings for 450 persons. The register dates from the year 1555. The living is a rectory, net yearly value, including 30 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late William Fripp esq. and held since 1869 by the Rev. Gilbert Lyon B.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge. Here are Wesleyan and Baptist chapels. The Blaydon Club, containing library, news room and billiard and games rooms, was erected in 1901 at a cost of £2,000, by Sir W. H. Wills, bart. The Public Village Hall, at Rickford, erected by Sir W. H. Wills, is used on Sundays as a Baptist chapel. The endowed charities amount to about £30 yearly value, which sum is distributed once a year to the second poor of the parish. At Rickford is an ornamental sheet of water, surrounded by shrubberies, formed and planted at the cost of Sir W. H. Wills bart. The Bristol Water Works Co. are now carrying out works here in connection with the Bristol water supply, in pursuance of a scheme sanctioned by Parliament in 1888—9, and the Yeo Valley reservoir (1901), in course of construction here, will hold 1,700 million gallons and forms a magnificent freshwater lake, supplied both from the Yeo and from certain springs; a pumping station is now (1901) in course of erection at the west end of the reservoir Coombe Lodge, the seat of Sir William Henry Wills bart. D.L, , J.P., F.R.G.S, is surrounded with plantations, and overlooks the romantic scenery of Bickford on the one side and on the other the extensive vale of Wrington. Blagdon Court is the seat of Mrs. Newnham Chas. Theodore Halswell Kemeys-Tynte esq. of Halswell park, Goathurst; Ernest Edward Baker esq. F.S.A, of Weston-super-Mare, and Sir W. H. Wills bart. are the chief landowners. The soil is various, that situated under the hills is light and very fertile; the subsoil is generally dolomitic conglomerate and red marl; there is also a considerable quantity of limestone. The chief crops are corn, roots and some land in pasturage. The area is 3,517 acres; rateable value, £4,605; the population in 1891— was 901 in the civil and 939 in the ecclesiastical parish.

By Local Government Board Order 17,339, which came into operation March 25, 1885, a detached part of Blagdon was amalgamated with Butcombe, and at the same date, by the same Order, a part of the tithing of Regilbury was transferred to Winford from Blagdon.

Mission services are held every Sunday in the Board School; the Rev. George Menzies Lambrick M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, has been curate-in-charge since 1894, and resides at Cheddar.

A School Board of 5 members was formed December 17, 1879, for the united district of Blagdon & Charterhouse.

Board (mixed), erected in 1842, & enlarged in 1895, for 170 children; average attendance, 120.

School, Charterhouse, erected at the extremity of the parish, adjoining to the village of Charterhouse", in 1861, at a cost of £500, on land presented by the 5th Viscount Clifden.
