Historical Description

BRADFORD is a pleasant village and parish, on the main road from Taunton to Wellington and Exeter, 4 miles south-west from Taunton station on the Great Western railway, and 3 north-east from Wellington, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Taunton Deane, Wellington petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Wellington, archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. The river Tone intersects the parish near the village. The church of St. Giles is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, with some Norman remains, and consists of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, north transept, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, and a turret on the south side and containing a clock and 6 bells: in the chancel is a brass to the Adair family, formerly of Heatherton Park, and in the wall of the south aisle is a full length effigy of a man in armour, temp. Edward III.; there are also marble tablets to the Easton and Petten families: the east and four other windows are stained: the church affords sittings for 300 persons. The parish stocks are still standing in the churchyard. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value about £110, including 24 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. Philip Palfrey Broadmead M.A, of Milverton, and held since 1901 by the Rev. William Tofield Reeder M.A. of Clare College, Cambridge. The following curious legend appears in the oldest register of this parish:-“Ralph Ironside B.D. rector of Longbardy and Littlebardy, in ye county, worth £25 per a was deprived of his livings and forced to get his living in the Isle of Portland, by picking of stones, being hired to do it for 2d. per day: while the poor old gentleman was thus afflicted, he received sixpence from a poor woman, one Mary Bartlett, who brought it to him privately in Gotwell Coppice, where he lay hid. One day the Parliament soldiers plundered his house; they took from him everything he had in the house; and having a lap dog, which he fancied very much at that time, fawning upon him, a strumpet belonging to one of the plunderers came to the room where the old gentleman was and demanded it. The poor old man begging her not to take that last of his goods by violence from him, she gave him a severe box on the ears and said, ‘ I am able to keep a dog better than thou art, thou old rogue.' This poor gentleman was carried prisoner to Dorchester gaol, several persons being ready to swear he had not conformed according to Gods ordinance, thereby they meant the ordinance of Parliament, for repeating the Common Prayer. He constantly suffered an innumerable deal of hardship upon that account. He continued deprived of his livings and exiled in the Isle of Portland until the Restoration. Of him it was said that he was preferred to the archdeaconry of Dorchester, neither for favour nor friendship, but purely for his merits.”-Vide Not: Oxon. Here is a Congregational chapel. Heatherton Park, the seat of Capt. Samuel Henry Woodhouse, is pleasantly situated about half a mile south from the village. Bradford Court, consisting of about 17 acres, is the residence of the Right Rev. Thomas Edward Wilkinson D.D. Assistant Bishop (London) for North and Central Europe: the river Tone runs through the grounds, which are very attractive, and intersected by a beautiful shaded drive; the house and grounds afford magnificent views of the Quantock and Black Down hills. The manors have been divided and the rights belong to the several landowners, the chief of whom are the Misses Easton, of Bishopshull, Commander Arthur Braithwaite Wane R.N. of 109 Onslow square, London, S.W. and Thomas Starkey esq. The soil is chiefly a strong clay and produces excellent crops of wheat, beans, barley, mangolds, potatoes and turnips; subsoil, mixture of stone rush and clay. The area is 1,797 acres of land and 17 of water; rateable value, £5,392; the population in 1901 was 421.

A School Board of 5 members was formed October 27, 1885.

Board School (mixed), erected in 1886, for 100 children; average attendance, 63.
