Historical Description

BREWHAM (NORTH and SOUTH) are parishes on the river Brue, 3 miles north-east from Bruton station on the Great Western railway, in the Eastern division of the county, Eastern division of Bruton hundred, Wincanton petty sessional division, union and, county court district, rural deanery of Bruton, archdeaconry of Wells and diocese of Bath and Wells. By Local Government Board Order 16,852, 25th March, 1885, part of the parish of Eastrip containing Brewham Lodgefarm was amalgamated with this parish. The church of St. John the Baptist is an ancient building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled tower on the south side containing 5 bells: the church, with the exception of the tower, was thoroughly restored in 1882, and has sittings for 180 persons. The register dates from the year 1660. The living of the united parishes of North and South Brewham is a vicarage, net yearly value £90, in the gift of Sir Henry Hugh A. Hoare bart. and held since 1889 by the Rev. Edward John Langford B.A. of Caius College, Cambridge, who is also incumbent of St. Peter’s chapel, Redlynch. The late Henry Hoare esq. erected a triangular brick tower, 150 feet in height, called “Alfreds,” or “Stourton” tower, to commemorate the valour and virtues of King Alfred the Great, who here fought a battle with the Danes. There are Wesleyan and Baptist chapels in North Brewham. Colinshayes Manor, a residence on Kingswood Hide and part of the ancient forest of Selwood, is the property of and now occupied by Henry Luke Dillon Trenchard esq. Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare barb, who is lord of the manor and lay impropriator, and the Earl of Ilchester P.C. are the chief landowners. The soil and subsoil are mostly clayey. The chief crops are oats and barley, and some land in pasture. The area of North Brewham is 2,026 acres; rateable value, £2,714; area of South Brewham, 2,671 acres; rateable value, £3,034. The population in 1901 of North Brewham was 186, and of South Brewham 274.
